Chapter 57 - The Truth of the Two Sons

The silence in the underwater vault was absolute, broken only by the hum of the cooling pumps and the steady, ticking countdown of the purge timer.
*“Seven minutes to purge,”* the mechanical voice droned.
"What is that screen saying?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking with a terror he had never felt before in his entire life, not even facing down armed syndicates or burning estates. "What does it mean, *Primary Biological Anchor*?"
The magistrate lowered his rifle, looking down at Leo with an expression of profound sorrow. "Six years ago, Daniel, your son Leo fell ill. He was hospitalized in Geneva with acute respiratory failure. You were told he was placed in an induced coma for three weeks while a revolutionary gene therapy cleared his lungs."
Daniel remembered that month. He had barely slept, pacing the cold white corridors of the Swiss clinic, praying until his knees bled. When Leo finally woke up, smiling and asking for ice cream, Daniel had wept with gratitude.
"The clinic was run by the Vance Foundation," the magistrate whispered. "They didn't cure him, Daniel. They harvested him. The real Leo—the boy born to your wife—was retained here as the baseline genetic template, kept in cellular stasis to provide an endless supply of pristine marrow and cellular stock for their synthesis program."
Daniel stared at the boy holding the tablet.
Leo looked down at his own hands. The tablet slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the steel deck. He looked up at Daniel, his eyes filling with tears that were undeniably, heartbreakingly human. "Dad? If he's Leo... then who am I?"
"You are my son," Daniel snarled without an instant of hesitation, stepping forward and dropping to his knees, gripping the boy's shoulders with iron conviction. "You hear me? You are my son. You are the one I held, the one who read books with me, the one who fought beside me every mile of this nightmare. You are Leo."

A sudden violent thud rattled the glass of the tank.
Inside the glowing solution, the eyes of the boy in stasis snapped open.
