Chapter 13 - The Echo in the Backseat

The Suburban sped through the midnight deluge, the wipers slicing frantically across the windshield. Marcus drove in total silence, his knuckles white against the steering wheel, his eyes constantly scanning the rearview mirror for pursuit. In the passenger seat, Daniel sat twisted backward, staring at the eight-year-old boy who had called him “Dad” since he could first speak.

The medical documents Victor had waved in the rain sat on the console between them, damp and smelling faintly of mildew and old toner. Daniel had snatched them before Marcus’s team dragged Victor away to an undisclosed holding site.

“Leo,” Daniel began, his voice rough, stripped bare of the polished authority he commanded in the boardroom. “How long have you known who Victor was?”

Leo pulled his knees up to his chest, his small hands clutching the hem of his oversized black wool coat. He didn't cry. He hadn't cried when the wedding collapsed in disgrace; he hadn't flinched when the shot echoed across the pier. That chilling emotional detachment had always worried Daniel, though Claire had insisted it was merely the Sterling stoicism.

“I didn't know his name was Victor,” Leo said softly, his voice cutting through the hum of the engine. “I only knew him as the man from the greenhouse behind Mom’s clinic.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened until the muscles ached. “What did your mother tell you?”

“She didn't tell me anything. I found the tapes,” Leo answered. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive shaped like a vintage key—the very drive he had clutched at the church altar before exposing the bride. “Mom kept recordings of her sessions with the doctor in Zurich. She was terrified of you finding out that the real baby died. But Dad… Victor lied to you at the pier.”

Daniel leaned closer, his pulse hammering against his temples. “Lied about what?”

“He said I was his son,” Leo murmured, his dark eyes locking onto Daniel’s with an intensity that defied his age. “He said he gave me to Mom. But on the tape, Mom is screaming at him. She said Victor stole the first one, and that if she didn't take me and pretend nothing happened, Victor would bury both of us in the snow.”

Daniel felt the floor drop out from beneath his reality. “What do you mean, *both* of us?”

Leo looked down at his small fingers, twisting the silver ring Claire had given him before her death. “At the altar today, when Evelyn’s dress tore and the fake belly fell out, everyone thought she was faking a pregnancy for your money. But Evelyn didn't buy that silicone belly online, Dad. She got it from Victor’s clinic. And when I whispered to you that there was another one… I didn't mean another secret. I meant there is another boy.”

A cold chill settled over the car. Outside, lightning fractured the sky, illuminating the black spires of the city skyline in the distance.
