Chapter 41 - The Vault of the Unborn

A sudden murmur rippled through the legal observers. Magistrate Vogel frowned, looking from the drive to Daniel. "Explain yourself, Herr Sterling."

Arthur slammed his ivory cane against the marble floor with a crack that sounded like a gunshot. "This is delay! This is the pathetic maneuvering of a bankrupt fugitive! The child upstairs is genetically verified! Conrad, execute the petition!"

"The child upstairs is an unviable, clone-derived biological construct," Daniel stated, his voice cutting through Arthur’s fury like a scalpel. "He was grown in a black-market laboratory in Salzburg, using cellular material harvested from Leo's umbilical cord five years ago. He is not a natural triplet. He has no legal personhood under Swiss law, and he never did."

Arthur’s face drained of all color. His knuckles turned grey against the handle of his cane. "Lies! He's lying to you, Vogel!"

"The records on that drive were extracted from your own private server thirty minutes ago," Daniel continued, looking straight at Arthur. "Leo routed the transmission through your own intranet while your guards were watching the perimeter. You didn't harvest three babies from Claire, did you, Arthur? Claire only had two. Leo... and the girl."

Daniel leaned across the table, his eyes boring into his father’s soul. "You needed a third to satisfy the charter before noon today. So you fabricated one. You built a synthetic infant to steal a sovereign trust."

Magistrate Vogel’s hand shot out, plugging the flash drive into her encrypted terminal. Lines of code, medical facility logs, and unauthorized genetic synthesis receipts began cascading across the high-definition monitor facing the bench.

"Dear God," one of the junior magistrates whispered, horror dawning on his face.

"Shut it down!" Arthur shrieked, his composure completely shattering as he lunged toward the table, the oxygen tube ripping away from his nose. "Guards! Clear this room! Kill him! Kill them all!"

The private security contractors didn't move. Their commander, seeing the judicial seal on the monitor and the damning criminal evidence unfolding on the screen, stepped back, lowering his sidearm.

Arthur stood trembling, clutching the mahogany table, looking at Daniel with eyes full of venomous madness.

"You think you’ve won?" Arthur gasped, a bloody froth appearing at the corner of his lips as his failing lungs gave out. "You think you’ve broken the line, Daniel?"

Arthur reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy brass key—an antique, intricate key that belonged to no modern door in the manor.

"You don't know what Claire did before she died," Arthur whispered, a ghastly, dying grin spreading across his face. "You don't know what she left in the catacombs beneath this house."

Before Daniel could move, the floor beneath their feet shuddered violently. A deep, mechanical groan echoed from the subterranean foundations of the lakefront estate.

Leo grabbed Daniel’s arm, his eyes wide with horror as his handheld console went haywire, shrieking with an entirely new alarm.

"Dad!" Leo screamed, pointing at the reading. "There’s a fourth heartbeat! Underground! Right beneath us!"
