Chapter 34 - The Cabin on the Ridge

They found shelter three miles south, inside an abandoned forestry cabin half-buried beneath pine boughs and packed drifts. Julian had forced the rusted padlock with a tire iron, and within ten minutes, the cast-iron stove was radiating a stubborn, crackling warmth fueled by dry birch logs.

Leo sat on an upturned crate near the hearth, his fingers gently stroking the newborn’s tiny hand. The baby girl, wrapped now in clean flannel Julian had found in an emergency kit, had finally stopped crying, lulled by the rhythmic heat of the fire.

Across the room, the woman in the ruined wedding dress sat huddled against the rough timber wall. Her name was Evelyn Vance. Daniel knew her family—or at least what was left of it. The Vances had been junior partners in Arthur Sterling’s shipping empire until a sudden financial collapse five years ago wiped out their assets and drove Evelyn’s father to suicide.

"You were never supposed to marry me out of vanity," Daniel said, his voice quiet, standing over her with a cup of melted snow-water.

Evelyn took the cup with hands that refused to stop shaking. Her knuckles were bruised, the silver polish on her nails cracked and peeling. "Arthur owned everything my father left behind. The debts, the mortgages... my mother’s medical care. He came to me six months ago with a contract."

"A contract to stage a wedding," Daniel prompted, his jaw clenched tight.

"A contract to destroy you," Evelyn corrected, looking up, her dark eyes hollow with shame. "He told me you had stolen billions from the family trust. He said you were unstable, that you had hidden away your firstborn son and refused to acknowledge your responsibilities. He said the only way to save the Sterling name—and my family—was to humiliate you so completely in front of the board and the high court that you would be declared legally incompetent."

"And the pregnancy?" Julian demanded from the doorway, his weapon still resting across his knee. "The prosthetic carrier?"

Evelyn looked toward the baby sleeping by the hearth, tears welling in her eyes. "Arthur’s doctors brought her to my suite in Zurich three days before the ceremony. They told me she was born of a surrogate, that she was your biological child from frozen embryos harvested years ago. They built the prosthetic unit with thermal regulators, oxygen feeds, and dampening foam so she could sleep inside it during the processional."

She covered her face with her hands. "The plan was for the bump to rupture during the vows. Arthur wanted the press to think you struck me at the altar, causing a traumatic early delivery in front of the world. But when Daniel exposed the documents instead... the mechanics failed. The lock disengaged prematurely. The harness fell."

"And Arthur realized his theater was ruined," Daniel whispered, the puzzle pieces slamming into place with sickening clarity. "So he escalated to annihilation."
