Chapter 46 - The Phantom Directive

Daniel wrenched the worn silver band from his finger. He held it up to the harsh white light, seeing for the first time the microscopic concentric grooves etched onto the inner curve of the metal—grooves he had assumed for years were merely jeweler’s marks.

"Where do I place it?" Daniel yelled over the rising shriek of the capsule's pressure sirens.

"The scanner port below the monitor!" Leo directed, pulling back from the console to make room.

Daniel slammed the ring down against the glowing blue optical pad. The laser flashed once, twice, sweeping across the platinum surface. For three agonizing seconds, the machine remained silent, the pressure needle trembling millimeters from catastrophic rupture.

*Biometric cipher confirmed: Claire Vance. Welcome, Trustee,* the automated voice chimed. *Disengaging hydraulic lock. Commencing emergency drainage.*

With a thunderous hiss, thousands of liters of pale blue preservation fluid drained rapidly through the floor grates. The upright acrylic shield unlocked with a heavy mechanical click and slid upward into the ceiling recess.

Daniel caught the child as the harnesses released. She was light, ice-cold, and limp in his arms, her skin slick with synthetic fluid. He wrapped his woolen jacket tightly around her trembling frame, pulling her against his chest to transfer his own body heat.

"She’s breathing," the commander confirmed, pressing two fingers against her throat. "Weak pulse, but steadying. We need thermal blankets and pediatric trauma care immediately."

"Wait," Leo said, his eyes glued to the terminal screen as the purge sequence cleared away the system's defensive firewall. "Look at the project header on the terminal. She wasn't just a descendant, Dad. Look at the legal name Claire registered under the sovereign charter."

Daniel looked over his son’s shoulder. The glowing green text read:

*Subject Designation: Claire Elena Vance. Secondary Registry: Replicated Lineage.*

"Replicated?" Daniel breathed, his mind reeling as the implications struck him. "She wasn't just Claire's daughter. Claire... Claire cloned herself?"
