Chapter 51 - The Master Key

Magistrate Vogel dragged herself up against the boathouse railing, gasping for breath as she pulled her encrypted terminal back onto her lap. Despite her torn clothes and bleeding lip, her eyes burned with judicial fury.

"Mr. Croft," she declared, her trembling hand slamming down on the terminal’s biometric pad to lock the judicial record. "Under international maritime and banking law, your operational charter is revoked. You and your syndicate are formally indicted for conspiracy, high treason, and attempted murder."

The commander emerged from the rocks, carrying the young girl carefully in his arms, with Leo walking resolutely at his side. The private interceptor boat offshore, realizing the assault had completely failed, spun around in a shower of spray and vanished into the gray mist of the lake.

The shoreline fell into absolute, eerie silence, broken only by the gentle lapping of waves against the rocks and the dying wail of the foghorn.

Daniel stood up, wiping blood and slush from his knuckles. He walked toward his children, his heart swelling with a desperate, hard-won peace. The dawn was finally breaking over the hills behind the burning estate, casting a cold, pale light across the water.

"Is she awake?" Daniel asked gently, reaching out to brush a strand of dark hair from the girl's pale cheek.

As if responding to his voice, the child’s eyelids fluttered. She stirred in the commander's arms, letting out a soft, shuddering breath. Her eyes opened—eyes that were not dark like Claire's, but a striking, crystalline gray that Daniel had seen only once before in his life.

She looked past the commander, past the burning manor, and locked her gaze squarely onto Daniel.

There was no confusion in her expression. No childlike fear.

She opened her mouth, and when she spoke, her voice was not the voice of a disoriented child, but an eerie, modulated cadence that sounded like a perfectly trained adult.

"Authorization code: Vance-Nine-Zero-Zero," she whispered clearly into the freezing morning air. "Protocol zero has failed. The primary decoy in Zurich has been terminated."

Leo’s handheld console suddenly went berserk in his pocket, emitting a piercing, multi-frequency shriek that neither Daniel nor the magistrate had ever heard before.

Leo pulled the screen out, his face turning completely pale as lines of crimson satellite telemetry exploded across the glass.

"Dad..." Leo whispered, his voice shaking violently as he looked up from the screen toward the open expanse of the lake. "The signal... it didn't come from her."

May you like

Leo turned the screen toward Daniel.

On the radar map, four hundred miles to the north in an offshore deep-sea installation, an identical biometric signature had just powered on—and a fifth heartbeat was accelerating toward the surface.
