Chapter 99 - The Sovereign Protocol

"Lock the door!" Clara screamed.

Marcus slammed the heavy oak door shut and threw the deadbolts just as the street outside plunged into pitch blackness. The streetlamps had died simultaneously. The hum of the local transformer abruptly ceased, leaving the room illuminated solely by the amber glow of two battery-powered work lamps and the faint blue luminescence of Maya's portable spectrum analyzer.

"They've jammed the local cellular grid," Marcus reported, checking the tactical transceiver on his vest. "Dead static. We have sixty seconds before they breach the rear glass."

"Maya, do it," I said, my hand resting firmly on her shoulder.

"Wait!" Arthur lunged forward, his cane raised, the mask of aristocratic composure completely shattered into raw panic. "Katherine, you fool! You don't understand who is in those vans! It’s not just muscle! The board members of Sterling & Cross are out there! If those private keys are broadcast, half the banking infrastructure of Western Europe will face insolvency by morning! They will burn this city down before they let that transmission leave this room!"

"Then let it burn," Maya said.

She took the first punched card—stiff, cream-colored parchment covered in microscopic rectangular perforations—and fed it into the feeder slot of the antique terminal. The brass gears within groaned, then engaged with a sharp, mechanical chatter.

*Clack-clack-clack-whirrrr.*

The escapement wheel spun wildly, driven by a heavy internal counterweight that dropped through a vertical shaft beneath the safe. Maya placed her right thumb onto the small brass prism at the center of the terminal. Beneath the glass, a tiny beam of refracted light flickered, reading the microscopic ridges of her skin, comparing them against the brass-and-prism template set inside the mechanism fifty years ago.

A sharp, high-pitched chime rang out from the belly of the safe.

*MATCH CONFIRMED: SEED 01/03.*

"First tier unlocked," Maya said, her breath catching. "Aunt Clara, the second card!"

Clara reached into the leather binder, drawing the second card with trembling fingers, but before she could insert it, the front bay window exploded inward in a shower of diamond-sharp safety glass.

A flashbang detonated in the center of the display room with an ear-splitting *CRACK*, followed by a blinding eruption of white magnesium light.

The concussive wave threw Marcus against the wall. Henri fired twice into the billowing smoke, the suppressed pops of his pistol swallowed by the chaotic ringing in our ears. I threw my body over Maya, shielding her from the flying debris as heavy boots crunched across the shattered glass of the storefront.

Through the white smoke, two figures clad in matte-black tactical gear and full-face respirators vaulted over the ruined sill, their carbines raised.
