Chapter 66 - The Subterranean Vein

Marcus hauled the iron grate upward with a heavy, straining grunt, revealing a pitch-black vertical shaft descending fifteen feet into the bedrock of the lakeside cliff. Cold, damp air rushed upward, carrying the distinct scent of mineral water and wet stone.

"Down! Now!" Marcus barked, his eyes tracking the smoke-filled corridor where another squad of Julian's men was advancing with tactical shields.

I didn't hesitate. I lowered Leo first, trusting his sturdy grip on the rusty iron rungs set into the stone wall. Maya followed without a sound, her small fingers finding purchase on the cold metal. Eleanor scrambled down next, despite her injured arm, her face drawn in pain. I dropped through the opening just as a burst of automatic fire chewed through the wooden shelves above us, sending shattered glass jars and canned goods raining down onto the iron rim.

Marcus dropped in last, slamming the heavy iron grating shut behind him and jamming his combat knife into the locking mechanism to buy us seconds. We fell into an eerie, echoing darkness, illuminated only by the tactical flashlight mounted on Marcus’s sidearm.

The tunnel was narrow, its walls carved from rough limestone centuries ago. Water dripped steadily from the ceiling, gathering in shallow pools along the uneven floor.

"Julian knows about this tunnel," Eleanor whispered, leaning against the damp rock to catch her breath. "He was the one who surveyed the estate in 1994. He will have men waiting at the lake outlet."

"Then we don't go to the lake," I said, kneeling beside Maya and taking the blue estate folder from her hands. The exterior was scuffed with soot and moisture, but the thick, water-resistant parchment inside remained intact. "Julian said this ledger requires both Maya and Leo to decrypt. How does it work, Eleanor? No more lies. What is the physical mechanism?"

Eleanor pulled a small silver pendant from beneath her shirt—an intricate locket containing a tiny, mirrored prism. "It’s not just biometric. It’s an optical frequency match. When both children are placed before the consortium terminal, the reflection of their retinas through this prism completes the encryption circuit. It proves lineage through a specific genetic vascular pattern in the back of the eye that Julian and I share, but which only skips through direct Vance descent."

"And Arthur couldn't use it because he wasn't a Vance," I realized, the pieces finally snapping into focus. "He was merely an enforcer trying to blackmail his way in."

"Arthur was an insect," Eleanor said with bitter contempt. "Julian is the hive."
