Chapter 43 - The Severed Thread

The world disintegrated into screaming white fog and the thunderous roar of escaping gas.

Muzzle flashes strobed through the dense chemical cloud, casting jagged, violent shadows against the dripping vault walls. Gunshots cracked with concussive violence in the enclosed space, the rounds ricocheting off reinforced granite with high-pitched metallic shrieks.

"Leo!" I yelled, dropping to my knees. The halon bit into my lungs, cold and suffocating, making my vision swim with black spots.

A small, cold hand caught my sleeve in the blinding haze. I pulled the boy hard against my chest, wrapping my coat around his shivering frame. Through the thick mist, I saw the silhouette of a tactical operative raising a suppressed submachine gun, leveling it squarely at the back of the boy’s head.

Before the operative could squeeze the trigger, Nicholas materialized from the fog like a specter. He struck the man’s throat with the heel of his hand, grabbed the weapon’s barrel, and twisted it downward. A burst of suppressed fire chewed into the stone floor, spraying chips of wet rock. Nicholas drove his knee into the guard's midsection, stripped the sidearm from his tactical vest, and shoved the staggering operative backward into the primary hatchway.

"Move!" Nicholas barked, his face streaked with soot and white foam. "The emergency release inverted the pressure seal! The river gate is blowing!"

Behind us, the granite vault doors did not open smoothly. Deprived of the synchronized three-palm authentication at the zero mark, the Consortium's failsafe protocols engaged with terrifying brutality. Massive titanium shear pins detonated within the upper jamb. A deep, grinding vibration shook the floor under our knees as thousands of gallons of icy runoff from the Limmat began to breach the outer pressure barrier behind the blast hatch Arthur had breached.

"Leah!" Arthur’s voice tore through the white smoke—no longer measured, but sharp, feral, and edged with fury. "You have sealed your own execution! Bring the boy to the platform!"

Through the billowing chemical mist, I caught a glimpse of my father. He stood by the remaining iron stanchion, his cane raised, directing his surviving two operatives toward us. His silver hair was disheveled, his jaw clenched in absolute rage. For the first time in my life, I saw fear in Arthur Vance's eyes—not fear of death, but the catastrophic terror of losing control over the empire he had spent forty years constructing from lies.

"Not today, Father," I whispered.

Nicholas fired three controlled suppression shots toward the corridor ceiling, shattering the cast-iron drainage pipes overhead. A torrent of freezing subterranean water cascaded down between us and Arthur’s squad, creating a violent curtain of gray water and debris.

"The overflow sluice!" Nicholas shouted over the roar of the incoming water, grabbing Leo’s bound wrists and pulling him along. "The old guild runners mapped an emergency conduit beneath the St. Peter cathedral foundation! It’s thirty yards through the drain tunnel!"

I caught Leo by his waist, half-carrying him as we plunged into the knee-deep black water rushing through the lower sluiceway. The current was savage, clawing at our legs, pulling us toward the dark, arching mouth of the ancient Roman stone channel that ran parallel to the river.

Behind us, the deafening groans of the vault's main seal failing echoed like an artillery strike. The rush of the river breached the breached blast door, sweeping through the staging area with biblical fury. I heard the muffled shouts of Arthur's men, the frantic clatter of boots against wet iron, and then Arthur’s voice, swallowed by the roar of the deluge:

"Find them! If they reach the Münsterbrücke, burn the entire district!"

We plunged headlong into the suffocating pitch-blackness of the ancient conduit, the boy clinging to my neck with fingers that felt like ice, as the iron gates behind us slammed shut under hundreds of tons of roaring water.
