Chapter 16 - Whispers from the Grave

The DNA profile was clear and unequivocal. The paternal markers did not match the man I had believed to be Maisie’s father—my former fiancé, who had vanished abroad before her birth. The markers matched a direct, primary line.
Maisie Eleanor Vance was not my daughter through natural birth.
My hands shook so violently the paper rattled like dry leaves in the wind. I stared at the birth certificate. The mother's name was listed as *Leah Vance*. But the secondary documentation from the clinic revealed a truth buried beneath decades of calculated silence: Maisie was the biological child of Eleanor Vance—Thomas Vance’s late wife—born via a surrogate protocol arranged twenty years after Eleanor’s death, using cryogenically preserved embryos Thomas had safeguarded with an international trust in Zurich.
Thomas had not simply left his empire to his granddaughter. He had created an heir of pure, uncontaminated Vance bloodline, bypassed his fraudulent adopted son Arthur, and used me—the child he had raised from an orphaned cousin—as the legal guardian to protect the true matriarch of the family's future.
I was not her biological mother; I was her designated guardian, chosen because I was the only person in that poisoned dynasty who possessed a conscience.
"He didn't trust anyone," I whispered into the quiet cabin, tears stinging my cold cheeks. "Not even me with the full truth."
Suddenly, a metallic click broke the silence.
Set into the bottom of the black ledger's hollowed wooden binding was a tiny, recessed brass button, exposed now that the vellum had been peeled away. I pressed it.
A miniature tray slid open from the spine, no larger than a matchbox. Inside lay a micro-SD card and an antique, silver-plated key stamped with the number *108*.
I walked across the room to the corner desk, where an ancient, offline IBM ThinkPad sat covered in a canvas shroud. I booted the machine, plugged the memory card into an adapter, and opened the single video file stored within.
The screen flickered, then resolved into the weathered, imposing face of Thomas Vance. He looked frail, seated in his high-backed leather chair in the very study I had fled hours ago, but his dark eyes burned with an icy, unbroken intellect.
"If you are watching this, Leah," Grandfather’s voice crackled through the tinny speakers, measured and deep, "then Arthur has played his hand, and Julian Cross has revealed his teeth."
I leaned closer, my heart pounding against my ribs.
"Julian Cross believes that my death left his firm holding the keys to the kingdom," Thomas continued, a grim smirk playing on his thin lips. "He helped Arthur orchestrate the shell companies, feeding Arthur’s greed while slowly positioning his own firm to inherit the entirety of Vance Maritime once Arthur inevitably imploded. Julian believes Maisie's tenth birthday is the trigger for his victory. But Julian does not know about the Zurich registry. And he does not know about Safe Deposit Box 108 at the Union Depository in Boston."

Thomas leaned forward, his piercing gaze locking directly onto the camera lens.
"Arthur is a petty thief, Leah. But Julian Cross is an assassin. He was responsible for the car crash that killed my brother forty years ago. If you want Maisie to survive to see her tenth birthday, you cannot hide. You must strike the head of the snake before the sun rises."
