Chapter 51 - The Masque of Inheritance

Arthur’s face did not merely lose its color; the blood drained from his features until he resembled a marble corpse. His hands gripped the edges of the mahogany lectern with such force that the polished wood groaned beneath his fingers.
"Eleanor..." he whispered, the name slipping through the ballroom microphone, crackling with static.
"You look as though you've seen a ghost, Arthur Weiss," Eleanor Vance said, her voice clear, melodious, and carrying to every corner of the frozen room.
Murmurs erupted like wildfire across the ballroom floor. High-society matriarchs lowered their crystal flutes; corporate titans and hedge fund managers leaned toward one another, their eyes wide with disbelief.
"Security!" Arthur roared, abandoning his composure entirely. "Security, remove these impostors! This woman is an escaped psychiatric patient! She is clinically dead!"
"Touch her, and your entire consortium burns tonight," a cold, steady voice rang out from the back corridor.
Stepping through the doorway behind us, leaning against the jamb with a bandaged arm and a bruised but lethal expression, was Nicholas Sterling. Behind him stood two high-ranking inspectors from the Swiss Federal Banking Commission, accompanied by armed officers of the Zurich Cantonal Police.
Arthur took a stumbling step back from the lectern, his eyes darting frantically toward the private security guards posted around the perimeter of the room. But not a single guard moved. They looked at Nicholas, at the federal badges, and at the matriarch of the estate, and they remained frozen like stone statues.
I walked down the center aisle, the guests parting before me like the waters of the Red Sea. The swish of silk and the soft click of my boots against the parquet floor were the only sounds in the vast hall.
I reached the crescent table where the Seven Elders sat in stunned silence.
With a single, deliberate motion, I slapped the blue estate folder onto the midnight-blue velvet right in front of Baron von Stauffen.
"Audit Chapter One," I said, my voice ringing clear and merciless through the room. "The legal entity known as Arthur Vance does not exist. His true name is Arthur Weiss, born in Vienna to an estate groundskeeper. He forged the adoption decree of 1952 using stolen seals from the Austrian Chancellery."
Von Stauffen opened the folder with trembling hands. His eyes scanned the yellowed birth certificates, the forensic handwriting analysis, and the sworn affidavits stamped by the federal registry.
"Audit Chapter Two," I continued, turning to face my father, whose breathing had become rapid and shallow. "For thirty years, Arthur Weiss has systematically embezzled eight billion Swiss francs from the Consortium's sovereign reserves, routing them through Sterling & Cross shell corporations in the Cayman Islands to fund private mercenary operations."
"Lies!" Arthur screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched screech. "She's insane! She was always worthless! She couldn't even produce a proper heir! Her daughter is a mongrel!"
"Audit Chapter Three," Eleanor Vance said, stepping forward beside me, placing her hand gently on Leo's shoulder. "Subject Three—Leo—is my biological grandson, born via surrogate through my daughter Leah’s frozen lineage during her first medical treatment in Geneva. He is Leah’s biological son. And Maya is her biological daughter."
The room gasped. I turned to look at Leo, my heart stopping dead in my chest.
*My son.*
Leo looked up at me, his amber eyes filling with tears, not of fear, but of profound, unspoken recognition. The piece of my heart that had felt missing since the day I gave birth to Maya—the inexplicable void that the doctors had dismissed as postpartum trauma eight years ago when they told me my second child had been stillborn—shattered into a million pieces of brilliant, blinding light.
Arthur had stolen him from the delivery room. He had kept my son locked in an alpine cloister for eight years to use as a biological bargaining chip against my mother.
"You monster," I whispered, the sheer weight of his cruelty crashing over me like an avalanche. "You stole my baby."
May you like
"I made this family!" Arthur snarled, his eyes bulging with madness as he drew a small, silver-plated derringer pistol from his tuxedo pocket, aiming it directly at Eleanor’s heart. "I built this empire! You were nothing but names on old deeds! Without me, you are parasites!"
