Chapter 90 - The Gathering in Zurich

The air in the subterranean archive of the library was dry and smelled of aging parchment and climate-controlled filtration. Maya brought up a three-dimensional wireframe on her screen, tracing the architecture of the Vaduz trust.

"The day grandfather died," Maya explained, her fingers dancing over the keys, "his legal team filed a standard death certificate to freeze his accounts. But the trust in Vaduz didn't recognize his authority to begin with. It was an escrow entity created in 1952 by my great-grandmother Eleanor Vance. She set up a protocol stating that the estate could only bypass grandfather entirely if he committed an overt act of disinheritance against a direct bloodline heir."

"The blue folder," I breathed. "When I served him those documents across the Christmas dinner table, I wasn't just revealing his financial insolvency. I forced him to execute the disinheritance on the record, in front of twenty witnesses."

"Exactly," Maya said. "He signed the ledger refusal in anger. The moment he rejected me in front of the family, he triggered Great-Grandmother’s trap door. The entire foundation transferred into an unlisted blind trust awaiting my twenty-fifth birthday."

"Which is next week," Marcus noted grimly.

"Which is next week," Maya confirmed. "And whoever held the secondary key—the shadow overseers who managed the family's assets before Arthur Weiss usurped control—just realized that the clock has run out. They are coming to verify the succession in person."

Marcus leaned over the desk, analyzing the transmission coordinates. "The carrier frequency we detected at the farmhouse wasn't a threat. It was a homing beacon. They were checking to see if we were still at the coordinates listed in the original ledger."

"Then why the cloak-and-dagger tactics?" I asked. "Why send a courier with a cryptic note?"

"Because," Marcus replied, pointing toward the bottom line of the code display, "someone else is intercepting their network. Look at the ping reflection."
