Chapter 107 - The Lineage of Shadows

"Over my dead body," Marcus growled.
"That can be arranged in approximately one-tenth of a second, Sergeant," Julian replied evenly. "Do not flatter yourself with soldierly heroics. You are an ex-contractor with three cracked ribs and twenty rounds of subsonic ammunition against an elite tactical detachment of the Swiss Guard's private reserve. You are irrelevant."
"He may be irrelevant," I said, stepping forward half an inch, ensuring that Maya remained completely behind my silhouette, "but the cipher is not."
Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly. The arrogant smirk faltered for the barest fraction of a heartbeat.
"The blue folder wasn't just a legal instrument, Julian," I said, holding his gaze with all the venom and clarity I had gathered over twenty years of exile. "I read every footnote Eleanor wrote. I spent twelve years decoding her private marginalia while Father was busy parading his second wife around the Dolder Grand. Eleanor didn't build the Core Archive for you. She knew what you were."
The wind off the river whipped between us, carrying the scent of damp moss, snow, and the sharp, metallic tang of Arthur's blood pooling in the gravel.
"Eleanor knew you burned that yacht off Corsica because you had already embezzled the St. Gallen endowments," I continued, speaking clearly so that every operative in the shadows could hear. "She knew you were a sociopath who viewed the family trust not as a stewardship, but as an empire of personal leverage. The Protocol Zero isn't your master key, Julian. It's an identification latch. It recognizes your digital signature, yes. But it requires a dual-key authorization."
Julian took a step forward, his jaw tightening. "You bluff poorly, Katherine. Mother’s loyalty was to the firstborn son. That was the foundational doctrine of 1968."
"The doctrine of 1968 was revoked the night I was born," I countered, pulling Maya gently closer to my hip. "Why do you think Father hated me so much? Why do you think he tried to strip my name from the Christmas ledger? Because deep down, in his terrified, cowardly core, he knew Eleanor left the definitive executive power to the matrilineal line. Protocol Zero doesn't execute on your command alone. If you kill Maya, the Münstergasse Vault seals permanently. The cryptographic keys will purge from the quantum buffer, and thirty billion dollars will instantly default to the Swiss Federal Treasury as unclaimed asset funds."
A profound silence descended upon the terrace. Even the rustle of the pine branches seemed to hold its breath.
Julian stared at me, his slate-gray eyes scanning my face for a tell, a tremor, a blink. But I had spent the last two months running through the catacombs of our family’s sins; there was no fear left in me to betray.
"You're guessing," Julian said, though his voice had lost its smooth, musical timber.

"Test it," I said coldly. "Give the order to your sniper. Let’s see what happens to your forty-year resurrection when thirty billion dollars turns into a museum donation."
