Chapter 106 - The Caretaker's Reckoning

Arthur Vance slowly dragged himself up from the cold stone of the bench. The heavy winter overcoat that had once given him the silhouette of an industrial titan now hung upon him like a shroud on a scarecrow. His breath billowed into the freezing air, ragged and shallow.

"You used me," Arthur whispered, stumbling forward a single step before Clara raised her arm, blocking him from blundering into the sniper's line of fire. "For forty years... I bore the weight of the firm. I defended the accounts against Bern. I cleansed the board. I cast out Katherine because the covenant demanded purity of succession—"

"The covenant was a fairy tale I wrote for you, old man," Julian interrupted, his tone chillingly dismissive, as though swatting away a fly. "Mother was dying. She was paranoid, buried in her cabals and her numbered vaults. She wanted a bloodline that could outlast the century. But she was too weak to execute what was necessary. So I staged my little conflagration off the coast of Corsica. And I left behind a set of instructions tailored precisely to your overwhelming narcissism."

Arthur’s mouth fell open, a silent scream of comprehension freezing behind his teeth.

"You thought you were cleansing the house," Julian continued, stepping closer until the heavy gold signet ring on his pinky caught the streetlamp glare—the twin to the ring Eleanor had worn until her death. "You thought that by humiliating Katherine at your Christmas dinner, by pushing her little girl off her rightful chair and throwing her coat into the sleet, you were preserving the Vance dynasty for your chosen bastards. In reality, you were simply triggering the third fail-safe. Mother’s algorithm required absolute institutional betrayal to unlock the subterranean reserve. You gave me that betrayal, Father. You performed your role with exquisite vulgarity."

"I am the master of this estate!" Arthur roared, a sudden, desperate surge of his old tyranny flaring in his eyes. He lunged toward Julian, his withered fingers curled into claws. "I built the Zurich branch! I buried Eleanor!"

A muted *thwack* cracked through the icy stillness.

Arthur stopped mid-stride. A spray of dark crimson dotted the white gravel at his feet. He looked down, stunned, at the neat puncture in his left shoulder, where the suppression round had punched clean through his cashmere lapel and flesh. The shock hit him before the pain; his knees buckled, and he collapsed onto the frozen earth with a heavy, wet thud.

Maya gasped, hiding her face against my ribs. I pulled her tighter against my body, angling my own torso between her and the shadows of the tree line.

"Father, do quiet down," Julian said, without looking at the bleeding patriarch. "The canton has already ceded this square. The Zurich municipal police have been redirected to an imaginary gas main rupture at the main station. No one is coming to witness your final board meeting."

Julian shifted his gaze back to the terminal clutched in Clara's shivering hand. The emerald text still pulsed rhythmically: *WELCOME, JULIAN.*

"The ledger is awake," Julian said softly. "The thirty billion dollars did not freeze into a mathematical singularity, Katherine. That was merely the decoy protocol Eleanor left to fool small minds like yours and Father's. The assets have consolidated into the Core Archive at the Münstergasse Vault. And to authorize the final distribution, I only require one small, biological formality."

He extended his black leather-gloved hand toward Maya.

"Hand her over, Katherine. Or watch her die on this gravel, after which I will simply extract the bone marrow from her corpse."
