Chapter 46 - The Blood Archive

The interior of the transformer station hummed with a low, bone-deep sixty-hertz vibration. Giant humming electrical coils cast long, cage-like shadows across concrete floors littered with vintage maintenance manuals and heavy rubber grounding cables.

Nicholas pushed the iron hatch shut and wedged a heavy steel crowbar through the locking ring.

"We have five minutes before the local substation alarms register the manual bypass," he said, moving swiftly toward a heavy steel workbench against the back wall. On the desk sat an old, unnetworked IBM terminal from the late 1980s, modified with modern fiber-optic uplinks and a military-grade cryptographic transceiver.

Beside the monitor lay a duplicate of the blue folder I had slapped on my father's plate at Christmas.

"Julian set this up before the consortium raided the safehouse at Blackwood Ridge," Nicholas explained, typing rapidly on the mechanical keyboard. The green phosphor screen flashed to life, lines of hex code cascading down the monitor like luminous rain. "Eleanor knew Arthur had compromised every commercial cloud network and banking mainframe in Europe. So she built an isolated shadow ledger on the old Swiss Defense Ministry's decommissioned military intranet."

"What does it contain?" I asked, pulling Leo toward the terminal.

"Proof of sovereign treason," Nicholas replied grimly. "Arthur didn't just use Sterling & Cross to manage family wealth. He created a shadow syndicate known as the Midnight Consortium. They were laundering sovereign debts, financing black-market biological weapons research, and quietly purchasing corporate control of every critical water utility and power grid in Central Europe."

He pressed a key, and a prompt appeared on the green screen:

`INSERT CITADEL KEY: LEVEL 3 AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED`

`BIOMETRIC SAMPLE: PRIMARY (DIRECT DESCENDANT) + TERTIARY (VESSEL)`

"Leo," I said gently. "Give me your hand."

The boy did not hesitate. He placed his small, scarred thumb against the optical scanner beside the terminal. The screen flashed amber.

`TERTIARY SIGNATURE CONFIRMED: SUBJECT 3 (LEO VANCE-ST. GALLEN)`

`AWAITING PRIMARY MATERNAL SIGNATURE...`

I reached into my pocket, drew a small lancet from the medical kit Nicholas had carried, and pricked the tip of my index finger. A single drop of crimson welled up on the skin. I pressed it against the circular glass sensor.

The machine let out a high-pitched, harmonic chirp.

`MATCH CONFIRMED: LEAH VANCE (DIRECT MATERNAL LINE)`

`DECRYPTING CORE VAULT ASSETS...`

`ARCHIVE STATUS: UNLOCKED`

The screen cleared, and a series of scanned documents began to display.

The first was a birth certificate. Not mine, and not Leo’s.

It was my father's.

I leaned closer, my breath catching in my throat as I read the faded ink from the municipal registrar of Vienna, dated 1952.

"Arthur Vance isn't an Vance," I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "His name was Arthur Weiss. He was the son of Eleanor’s family’s estate manager."

"He was an imposter," Nicholas said, his voice deadly quiet. "Eleanor's father had no male heirs. When the old man died, Arthur used forged adoption records and corporate trusts to claim the Vance name and the primary seat on the Consortium board. Eleanor discovered the forgery thirty-five years ago, right after you were born. When she threatened to take the evidence to the Swiss Federal Banking Commission, Arthur staged her first 'psychotic break.'"

"And Maya..." I choked out, memories of that dreadful Christmas dinner flashing before my eyes.

Arthur’s sneering face as he pointed at my nine-year-old daughter. *“She does not carry our blood, Leah. She sits on the perimeter where she belongs.”*

"He wasn't rejecting Maya because she was illegitimate," I breathed, tears of sheer fury finally breaking past my eyelashes. "He rejected her because she was the *only* legitimate bloodline at that table! Her very existence proved he was a fraud!"

Before Nicholas could answer, the transformer station’s heavy steel exterior door shuddered under a massive, concussive blow.

The green monitor abruptly went red.

`PERIMETER BREACH: SECTOR 4`

`EXTERNAL OVERRIDE DETECTED`

From the street outside, a voice amplified through a tactical megaphone echoed against the concrete walls:

"Leah Vance. You have two minutes to exit the transformer station with Subject Three. The entire perimeter from the Limmat to the Bahnhofstrasse is locked down by private security under federal emergency warrant. If you do not surrender, we will deploy thermal incendiaries."

It was not Arthur’s voice.

May you like

It was the smooth, chillingly familiar voice of Marcus Sterling—Nicholas’s older brother, and the Chief Executive of Sterling & Cross.
