Chapter 109 - The Fractured Escape

The stone steps descending from Lindenhof to the riverbank were slick with black ice. Maya’s breath came in ragged, wheezing sobs as I dragged her downward, her small hand clutched so tightly in mine that our fingers felt fused by terror and adrenaline. Behind us, the sharp crack of semi-automatic fire echoed between the five-hundred-year-old plaster walls of the alleyways.
"Clara! Marcus!" I shouted into the gloom.
Clara appeared at my shoulder, her face streaked with cordite soot and rain. "Marcus is pinned at the upper arch. He’s buying us twenty seconds. We have to move, Katherine! If we get caught in these alleys, we're rats in a barrel."
"Where is the secondary vehicle?" I demanded, navigating the steep bend where the alley opened toward the dark, rushing waters of the Limmat.
"The parking garage beneath Urania," Clara gasped, her hand pressed against a bleeding graze along her ribs. "A nondescript gray station wagon. But Julian’s men have the street level locked down. Did you hear him? Protocol Zero consolidated everything into the Münstergasse Vault."
We hit the lower cobblestones of the Schipfe, the ancient riverbank path. The water ran black and swift beneath the medieval bridges, reflecting the distant, muted yellow lights of the guild houses on the opposite shore. Snow had begun to fall again, thick, heavy flakes that melted against our overheated skin.
Suddenly, Maya stopped dead. She pulled hard on my arm, forcing me to turn.
"Mom," she said, her voice small, trembling, but impossibly clear amidst the chaos. "Look."
She held up the small portable ledger terminal that she had snatched from the terrace flagstones during the crossfire. The screen was cracked, spider-webbed across its upper right corner, but the liquid-crystal display was still glowing with furious intensity.
The emerald green text had changed:
*BIOMETRIC RESIDUE DETECTED: ARTHUR VANCE (TERMINATED).*
*SUCCESSION MATRIX REALIGNING.*
*TIME REMAINING TO MASTER OVERRIDE: 47 MINUTES.*
*PHYSICAL INGRESS REQUIRED AT VAULT ZERO: MÜNSTERGASSE 17.*
"Arthur is dead," I whispered, the reality striking me like a cold fist in the stomach. He had spent his entire life treating me as an inconsequential shadow, an embarrassing stain on his fabricated pedigree. Yet his final act on earth had been to grab the leg of an assassin to buy my daughter three seconds of life.
"His death just accelerated the cascade," Clara said, checking the magazine of her sidearm. "Julian doesn't just want the money, Katherine. The Münstergasse Vault houses the original bearer shares of the Vance Maritime Foundation—the legal entity that owns the sovereign mining concessions in West Africa and the port rights in Rotterdam. If Julian physically inputs his key along with the ledger terminal before the timer expires, he doesn't just inherit the family wealth. He becomes untouchable by any international court."
"Then we don't run to the car," I said, looking across the dark water toward the twin towers of the Grossmünster rising like black monoliths against the snowy sky.
"What?" Clara stared at me in disbelief. "Katherine, Marcus sacrificed himself up there so we could escape the city!"
"We can't escape the city," I said, kneeling down in front of Maya and brushing a damp strand of hair from her forehead. "Julian has every bridge, every train station, and every highway monitored. The only place he doesn't expect us to go is directly into the mouth of the beast."
I looked at Maya. "Are you with me, sweetheart?"
Maya wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of her woolen sleeve, looked down at the glowing terminal, and then looked into my eyes.
May you like
"He told me to leave my chair at Christmas," she said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, unbreakable Vance determination. "Let's go take his."
