Chapter 93 - The Signal at Münstergasse

The shop on Münstergasse was tiny, nestled between an antique bookbinder and a traditional Swiss apothecary. Its window displayed dozens of mechanical movements, pendulum clocks, and brass chronometers ticking in a discordant, hypnotic polyrhythm.

We entered through the rear delivery entrance, guided by the operative who had given his name as Henri. Marcus entered first, weapon drawn and lowered along his thigh, his eyes clearing every corner of the dim, narrow corridor.

The air smelled intensely of fine machine oil, aged cedar, and ozone.

At the back of the workshop, seated behind a heavy workbench illuminated by a single brass lamp, sat a woman.

When she turned to face us, the breath caught in my throat. It was like looking into a silvered mirror from twenty years ago. She had my mother’s high cheekbones, the same sharp, penetrating Vance gaze, and hair streaked with silver at the temples, cut short in a practical bob.

She looked at me, then her gaze drifted toward Maya. A faint, sad smile touched her lips.

"You look just like Eleanor," she said quietly. Her voice possessed the same low, melodic cadence that I had heard in my own throat for decades.

"Clara?" I asked, lowering my weapon, though Marcus remained at high readiness near the threshold.

"Our father was a coward," Clara said plainly, standing up from the workbench. She wore a tailored charcoal suit, entirely unadorned except for a small silver watch chain pinned to her vest. "He spent his entire life building walls out of ledgers and legal threats because he knew he was an impostor. He was never the true heir. He was merely an administrator appointed by our grandmother until we reached majority."

"Why didn't you come forward?" I asked, the anger of twenty years of exile and conflict rising to the surface. "When he dragged me through the courts, when he tried to strip Maya of her name at that Christmas table—where were you?"

"I was holding the perimeter," Clara said, stepping toward a floor-to-ceiling iron safe set into the masonry behind her. "I was in Basel, keeping Arthur Weiss’s syndicate from discovering the master ledger. But I failed. They found the vault this morning."
