Chapter 86 - The Ghost in the Lattice

By morning, the crisp Alpine sun did little to dispel the chill that had settled over the farmhouse. Eleanor was already in the kitchen, rolling out dough for morning pastries with rhythmic calm, while Leo cleaned his gardening shears at the heavy oak table. Neither of them asked why Marcus and I had stayed awake until dawn cross-referencing ledger backups. They lived through enough seasons of war to recognize when the air grew thin.

A chime rang from the satellite communicator resting beside my coffee cup. It was Maya, calling through our secure channel from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

"Mom," Maya's voice came through crisp, slightly breathless, but unmistakably controlled. "Are you seeing unusual traffic on the regional quantum network?"

My fingers curled around the edge of the mug. "We picked up a low-frequency handshake near the lower ridge last night. What do you have on your end?"

"A synchronized packet anomaly," she explained, the clatter of a laboratory keyboard audible in the background. "My research team was running a test on encrypted entanglement nodes between Zurich and Geneva. Three minutes past midnight, someone hijacked an idle buffer channel. They didn’t steal any data. They left an open routing thread that points straight toward an old archive server under Münsterbrücke."

"That server was decommissioned when you were nine years old," I said, exchanging a sharp glance with Marcus.

"I know," Maya said. "That's why I dug into the signature. It bypassed three layers of modern university firewalls using a manual authorization code. Mom, the code was registered under my grandfather's legal trust. Not his primary account—the secondary account established the week before the Christmas dinner."

The very dinner where he had told my daughter to stand up from her chair. The memory surged back with crystalline clarity: the clink of silverware, the disdainful sneer on the patriarch's face, and the cold snap of the blue estate folder landing on the tablecloth.

"Maya, pack your essentials and head straight to the safe flat on Weinbergstrasse," Marcus instructed, leaning over the receiver. "Do not take the main tramline. Leo has a contact at the botanical gardens who can walk you through the back service roads."

May you like

"I’m already ahead of you, Marcus," Maya replied calmly. "I wiped my workstation five minutes ago. I’m carrying the drive with the packet trace. I'll see you in Zurich."
