Chapter 63 - The Parley at the Threshold

Marcus positioned himself against the left pillar of the grand entryway, his sidearm leveled at the center mass of the door, his finger hovering outside the trigger guard. "If you open this seal, Leah, we lose the biometric perimeter. The blast shutters will disengage on the ground level."

"He already has the override codes, Marcus," Eleanor said quietly. Her hands had stopped shaking; in their place settled the icy, fatalistic composure of a woman who had spent forty years surviving inside the Vance network. "Arthur Weiss was Julian’s creature from the beginning. Every fail-safe we built into Lake Geneva was designed by Julian’s architects before Leah was even born. Locking the door only forces them to use breach charges. We preserve the room, or we preserve our eardrums."

I walked forward and pressed the manual release beside the reinforced double doors. The heavy pneumatic latches hissed, discharging high-pressure nitrogen into the cold air as the heavy glass swung inward.

A gust of freezing Alpine wind swept into the entryway, carrying the crisp scent of pine needles and snow. Julian Vance stepped over the threshold, his leather shoes clicking sharply on the polished Carrara marble. He paused, unbuttoning his coat with slow, deliberate elegance, revealing a three-piece charcoal suit and a platinum watch that ticked with surgical precision.

"A warm reception," Julian murmured, casting an amused glance at Marcus’s drawn weapon. "Put the gun away, Commander. If I intended to butcher my bloodline, your tactical team would have been neutralized before you crossed the border at Basel. We have too much work to do to waste ammunition on each other."

His gaze shifted, bypassing me entirely to land on Maya and Leo standing in the shadows of the great hall. The mockery vanished from his expression, replaced by a cold, calculating hunger.

"Eleanor," Julian said without looking at his sister. "You hid the boy in St. Gallen. You divided the estate’s primary encryption keys between the twins, hoping Leah would stumble through the fog and raise them as ordinary suburban casualties. A mundane life in an Ohio subdivision. What a grotesque waste of human potential."

"They are children, Julian," I said, stepping directly into his line of sight, blocking his view of Maya and Leo. "They are not proprietary assets. They are not biological keys for your consortium. And if your men take one more step onto this property, the dead-hand protocol Eleanor established doesn't just release Arthur's crimes—it broadcasts every hidden asset of Sterling & Cross directly to Interpol, the IRS, and the Swiss Federal Banking Authority."

Julian laughed—a low, genuine sound that sent a cold shudder down my spine. "My dear Leah. Who do you think taught Eleanor how to build a dead-hand switch?"
