Chapter 70 - The Resonance of Blood

The silence in the carriage house was absolute, save for the rhythmic hum of the high-powered communications array. Maya stopped two feet from the titanium briefcase. The blue illumination from the optical scanner washed over her small face, reflecting in her wide, unblinking eyes.
"Maya, close your eyes!" Leo yelled from the threshold, his small voice cracking with terror. "Mom said don't look!"
Julian stepped closer to her, his expression radiant with triumphant arrogance. "Ignore them, child. You are a Vance. The blood that flows in your veins built the modern world. Look into the lens."
Maya looked up at Julian. She didn't look afraid. There was a chilling stillness in her posture, a direct inheritance from the generations of ruthless men and women who had preceded her.
"Grandpa told me to get out of my chair," Maya said quietly, her voice ringing clear in the cold garage. "He said I wasn't a real grandchild. But my mother gave me that folder."
"Your grandfather was an idiot," Julian said, his patience thinning. "Look into the scanner."
Maya reached out her small hand, touching the edge of the titanium case. Then, with a sudden, vicious flick of her wrist, she pulled the silver pendant Eleanor had given her from her pocket and jammed the miniature mirrored prism directly into the high-precision laser aperture of the retinal scanner.
"Now, Leo!" Maya screamed.
From across the room, Leo threw the second object he had been holding in his fist—the small, solid gold signet ring he had slipped from the study in Lake Geneva hours earlier. The heavy metal tumbled through the air, crashing directly onto the exposed circuit board of the mobile terminal.
The optical array didn't read an eye. It read a shattered, refracted beam of multi-angled light, amplified through Eleanor’s antique prism and short-circuited across the terminal's motherboard.
A shrill, deafening alarm tore through the communications console. The blue screens violently flickered to crimson. Lines of error code cascaded down the monitors at blinding speed:
`CRITICAL HARDWARE FAULT: CORRUPTED CRYPTOGRAPHIC SEED.`

`EMERGENCY PURGE ENGAGED.`
`GLOBAL LEDGER LOCKDOWN: INDEFINITE.`
