Chapter 112 - Midnight at the Bahnhofstrasse

The scanner flashed once, twice, three times, sending emerald ripples across the circular console. A low, resonant chime echoed through the vault, followed by the heavy clunk of pneumatic locks disengaging beneath the floorboards.
*BIOMETRIC RESIDUE MATCH: 99.8% MATRILINEAL CONTINUITY.*
*SOVEREIGN LEDGER PRIMARY CONTROL ASSIGNED TO: MAYA ELEANOR VANCE.*
*OVERRIDE PROTOCOL ZERO: ABORTED.*
"We did it," Clara breathed, lowering her sidearm. "It's locked down. Julian’s digital key is completely neutralized."
"Not yet," I replied, staring at the terminal screen. "Look at the status line."
Across the monitor, a new warning was flashing in urgent amber:
*PHYSICAL REPOSSESSION IN PROGRESS.*
*EXTERNAL ACCESS POINT: SECTOR 4 DRAINAGE FLUE.*
*PRESSURE VARIATION DETECTED: DEMOLITION CHARGE ARMED.*
"He found the ventilation shaft," Clara cursed, spinning toward the circular iron hatch at the rear of the vault. "He’s not trying to blow the door—he’s blowing the exhaust flue! He’ll flood this chamber with gas or collapse the ceiling!"
A muffled, concussive *BOOM* shook the entire room. Dust and centuries-old mortar cascaded from the vaulted ceiling like gray snow. The overhead lights flickered violently before dying entirely, plunging the vault into total blackness, illuminated only by the strobing violet and amber LED indicators of the server racks.
"Clara! Maya! Behind the desk!" I screamed, pulling Maya down beneath the heavy teak surface.
The iron exhaust hatch tore free from the wall with a deafening screech of ripping metal, flying across the room and smashing into a bank of server racks in a shower of sparks. Through the gaping, smoky hole in the wall tumbled two stun grenades, their magnesium cores blindingly bright.
*BANG. BANG.*
The shockwaves slammed into my chest, stealing my breath and filling my ears with a shrill, deafening whine. Through the billowing gray smoke, three figures in tactical gear dropped into the vault, weapons raised, laser sights cutting through the haze like crimson needles.
Clara fired from behind a steel pillar, dropping the lead operative with a disciplined burst to the hip and neck. The other two operatives immediately laid down suppressive fire, chewing the heavy teak desk into splinters above our heads.
"Katherine! Move to the rear egress!" Clara shouted, her voice barely audible through the ringing in my ears. She leaned out to fire again, but a single round caught her in the upper arm, spinning her around and forcing her back behind the pillar.
Out of the smoke walked Julian.
He had abandoned his overcoat; he wore a black tactical vest over his tailored suit, holding a silver-plated semi-automatic pistol with casual, terrifying ease. His silver hair was dusted with concrete powder, but his eyes were bright with a manic, triumphant fury.
"Did you really think an old woman’s biometric parlor trick could stop forty years of preparation, Katherine?" Julian shouted over the hum of the dying servers. "You won the digital ledger. Congratulations! But possession of the physical bearer bonds requires the living consent of the designated heir—or her legal execution before the Swiss cantonal court declares an intestate succession!"
He raised his weapon, aiming directly through the shattered remnants of the teak desk.

"Come out, sister. Bring the girl. Or I will simply empty this magazine through the wood and let the coroner sort out the pieces."
