Chapter 87 - An Unsettled Silence

The drive down from the Valais through the winding curves of the mountain pass was conducted in complete radio silence. We took the older estate car—unremarkable, dusted with road salt, and completely stripped of modern wireless telemetry that could be traced via roadside scanners.
Eleanor and Leo had remained at the farmhouse, tasked with shifting the perimeter alarms from passive monitoring to full physical interdiction. Leo’s hands had not shaken as he oiled the heavy bolts of the iron storm shutters. "We built this haven on bedrock," he had told me before we departed. "Bedrock does not give way to ghosts."
Marcus drove with steady, measured precision, his eyes constantly scanning the mirrors and the forested pull-offs along the highway.
"If the trust account is active," Marcus said after we passed the toll booth outside Bern, "it means someone retained secondary executive authority. When we dismantled Arthur Weiss and neutralized the House of Vance, we assumed every proxy was accounted for."
"We accounted for everyone who signed the Sovereign Ledger," I corrected, looking out at the mist clinging to the pine slopes. "We didn't account for who might have been drafted after the fact. Remember the missing forty-eight hours between Julian's disappearance and my father's emergency board assembly?"
"The missing ledger annex," Marcus murmured. "The documents your father claimed were lost during the archive transit."
"He didn't lose them. He was terrified of them. That's why he tried to force Maya out of the succession before anyone realized she possessed the sovereign biological imprint required to access that final tier."

I looked down at my hands. Years of peace had softened the calluses, but the muscle memory remained intact. The blue folder had dismantled an empire, but empires leave behind foundations deep beneath the earth, long after the towers have crumbled.
