Chapter 47 - The Phantom Shareholder

Nicholas froze, his hand suspended over the terminal keyboard. His knuckles turned bone-white.
"Marcus," he breathed, the name barely a whisper. "He didn't just back Arthur. He took over the enforcement wing."
"Your brother?" I asked, looking between him and the rattling steel door. "Nicholas, you told me Marcus was in London, managing the family's investment funds!"
"He lied to me, Leah," Nicholas said, his eyes burning with an agonizing mix of grief and fury. "Or perhaps he's been Arthur's creature from the very beginning. The Sterling family didn't just sell me out—they traded my loyalty to Arthur Vance in exchange for forty percent of the Consortium's sovereign bond portfolio."
The terminal screen began to emit a rapid, urgent tone. The hex code on the monitor suddenly reorganized itself into an unfamiliar directory.
`INCOMING ENCRYPTED TRANSMISSION`
`SOURCE: CITADEL CENTRAL NODE (ZURICH INTERIOR)`
`ORIGIN: UNKNOWN SHADOW ROUTE`
A single line of text appeared, bypassing Marcus's external firewall:
`YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE WRONG ENEMY. ARTHUR IS ALREADY EXPENDABLE. THE ASSEMBLY CONVENES AT MIDNIGHT AT BAUR AU LAC. DO NOT LET HIM PRESENT THE CUSTODY DEED.`
`— E.V.`
"E.V.?" I gasped, pointing at the screen. "Eleanor? But Nicholas, you said she was confined—Julian told us she died three weeks ago in the sanitarium!"
"That's what the records said," Nicholas muttered, his mind racing as he pulled a USB encryption key from the terminal and severed the physical fiber link with a single slice of his tactical knife. "Julian never saw her body. Arthur claimed she died of cardiac arrest, produced a signed cremation certificate, and sealed the estate."
"She's alive," Leo said softly, tugging at my coat. "I told you. She's in the tower with the blue books."
"The Baur au Lac," Nicholas said, turning toward the back exit of the transformer room. "It’s Zurich’s most exclusive luxury hotel, right on the edge of the lake. Every year on the winter solstice, the Consortium holds its annual shareholder assembly in the private ballroom beneath the hotel. It's not a business meeting—it's a sovereign tribunal where the seven families divide the continental portfolios."
"Arthur isn't hunting us just to hide the ledger," I said, the pieces assembling into a terrifying picture. "He’s presenting Leo to the Consortium tonight to prove he has control over Eleanor's trust! If he presents the custody deed and Subject Three’s biometric token, the seven families will ratify his total ownership of the Vance estate forever!"
"And if he doesn't?" Nicholas asked.
"Then his fraud is exposed. The assets revert to me, and the Consortium tears him apart to protect their own money."
Another massive impact slammed against the steel front doors. The heavy bolts bent inward, sparks showering across the concrete floor as a hydraulic spreading tool tore through the metal frame.
"Out the back!" Nicholas commanded, drawing his sidearm. "Through the maintenance alley into the old cloister gardens! We have less than forty minutes before midnight!"
He kicked open the rusted emergency exit that led into the freezing winter night.
Snow was falling heavily now, large white flakes swirling in the cold wind coming off Lake Zurich. The rooftops of the Old Town were blanketed in white, but below, the streets were alive with the flashing blue and amber lights of unmarked tactical vehicles.

We slipped out into the darkness, three ghosts running through the snow, while behind us, the transformer station collapsed into a violent flare of white phosphorus.
