Chapter 8 - The Ghost's Return

The wealthy guests gasped, physically recoiling away from the blonde Bride as if she were a literal monster.

The Father staggered backward, clutching his chest, staring at his youngest daughter with pure, unadulterated disgust and profound, agonizing heartbreak. "You... you tried to murder your own sister?"

"Dad, no! Those pictures are fake! He's lying!" the Bride shrieked hysterically, completely abandoning her elegant posture as she sobbed wildly, her lies entirely unraveling in real time.

Caroline stepped forward, her bare feet silent against the marble, entirely ignoring her sister's pathetic screaming.

"The mechanic did his job," Caroline explained, her voice remarkably calm for a woman who had recently survived a horrific murder attempt. "When my brakes failed on the mountain, I knew I was going to crash. But the mechanic hadn't strangled me hard enough in the driveway. I was still conscious. Just seconds before the car went into the ravine, I managed to open the door and throw myself out onto the dark road."

The car had plummeted into the trees and exploded, completely incinerating everything inside. Caroline had rolled down the embankment, suffering a severe concussion, massive bruising, and completely losing consciousness in the deep woods, miles away from the burning wreckage.

"I was found the next morning by a passing logger and taken to a small, rural hospital entirely outside the city limits," Caroline continued. "I had no ID. My face was completely swollen. I was in a severe coma for two and a half weeks as a complete Jane Doe. When I finally woke up two days ago and realized what my sister had done, I didn't call the police."

Caroline looked at the man with the beard.
