Chapter 52 - the ultimatum
Caroline calmly opened the envelope. Inside was a subpoena to testify before a senate committee, accompanied by an implicit ultimatum from Vance: voluntarily hand over the management rights of the foundation, or face sophisticatedly fabricated tax evasion charges.
Thomas stepped into the office, placing his familiar brown leather briefcase on the desk. The face of the loyal lawyer was as sharp and cold as ice. He had accompanied her through countless storms, and he knew perfectly well the level of danger of the enemy this time.
"Vance has bribed more than half of the committee members," Thomas reported, his deep voice containing indignation. "He has prepared a dirty media campaign to smear your honor before the hearing takes place."
Caroline stood up, her brown eyes flashing with a razor-sharp glint. She had never backed down before any extortionist, no matter how immense a political power facade that person hid behind.

"We never negotiate with despicable corrupt men," Caroline declared firmly. "Turn over every hidden corner of Vance's life for me. We will destroy him completely right now."
