Chapter 55 - THE CONFRONTATION AT THE STUDIO

The Chicago night was freezing, the wind howling off the lake as Hannah’s armored SUV pulled up outside Vale Access Design. The studio had been repaired since the mercenary siege, the reinforced glass gleaming under the streetlights.
Hannah stepped out of the vehicle alone. She told Clara’s security detail to remain in the car. She needed to do this face-to-face.
She unlocked the front doors using the access code Caleb had given her a year ago. It still worked.
The studio was dark, save for the glow of the massive, multi-screen workstation in the back office. Hannah walked slowly through the drafting tables, her heart pounding violently against her ribs.
Caleb was sitting at the workstation, his back to the door. He was typing furiously, completely absorbed in the cascading lines of data on his screens.
"Caleb," Hannah said softly, stepping into the dim light of the office.
Caleb froze. He didn't turn around immediately. His hands hovered over the keyboard for a long, agonizing second.
When he finally turned the chair, Hannah barely recognized him.
He looked exhausted, his dark hair unkempt, his eyes burning with a dark, obsessive, terrifying fire. The gentle, compassionate architect was gone. He looked exactly like Dominic Vale in his prime—a ruthless, untouchable warlord.
Caleb didn't speak. He didn't sign a greeting. He simply stared at her.
"I know what you are doing, Caleb," Hannah signed, her hands trembling violently. "I traced the ghost ledger. You are siphoning the Sterling capital through phantom real estate companies. Why?"
Caleb looked at her, his expression entirely devoid of warmth. He raised his hands, his movements sharp, precise, and lethal.
"You left me, Hannah," Caleb signed, his eyes locking onto hers with apocalyptic intensity. "You walked away and partnered with Clara Bennett. You took the throne of the empire that murdered my mother."
"I took the throne to destroy it!" Hannah signed frantically, tears spilling down her cheeks. "I am using the money to bankrupt the New York families! I did it to protect you!"
"I don't need your protection," Caleb signed, standing up, towering over her with the same intimidating physical presence as his father. "You think you can control the monster’s money without becoming a monster? Clara Bennett is using you, Hannah. She is using your biometric access to consolidate her own power."
Hannah staggered backward, shocked by the accusation. "Clara is helping me dismantle the syndicates."
"Clara is building a monopoly," Caleb corrected ruthlessly, stepping closer to her. "And I am not going to let the Sterling legacy survive in any form. I am not stealing the money to build an empire, Hannah. I am stealing it to burn it all to the ground."
Caleb turned back to the workstation and hit a single key.
The screens flashed red.

"I just initiated a localized, structural purge on every single offshore account connected to the Sterling-Bennett alliance," Caleb signed, a dark, tragic victory in his eyes. "I am wiping the slate clean."
Hannah stared at the screens, realizing that the man she loved had just declared total, absolute war on the only leverage she had left to survive.
