Chapter 47 - THE WARDEN'S CONFESSION

The secure safe house in the suburbs of Illinois was heavily guarded by Alexander’s private security detail. The atmosphere inside was tense, sterile, and unforgiving.
Hannah walked into the small, sparsely furnished living room. Caleb walked beside her. They didn't touch. They kept a careful, agonizing distance between them, bound by shared trauma but separated by an impossible reality.
Daniel Mercer was sitting at a small wooden table. He looked ten years older than he had two days ago. The quiet, dignified teacher was gone, replaced by a broken man who had finally been crushed by the weight of his own secrets.
He looked up as Hannah entered. His eyes immediately filled with tears.
"Hannah," Daniel signed, reaching his hands out across the table.
"Don't," Hannah said, her voice sharp as glass. She didn't sign back. She spoke aloud, forcing Daniel to read her lips, a deliberate act of distancing herself from the language they had shared their entire lives. "Don't you dare act like a father right now."
Daniel flinched, pulling his hands back. He looked down at the table, sobbing silently.
Caleb stood beside Hannah, his face a mask of cold, terrifying resolve. He signed to Daniel, his movements precise and lethal. "You let me sleep with my own sister. You watched me buy a ring. You smiled at us. What kind of monster are you?"
Daniel closed his eyes, the tears streaming down his weathered face. He raised his hands and signed slowly, desperately. "I didn't want to ruin her life. Elena made me swear. She made me swear on her life that Hannah would never know the truth."
"Why?" Hannah demanded, her voice cracking. "Why would she do this to me? Why would she abandon me?"
"She didn't abandon you, Hannah," Daniel signed, looking up at her with profound, agonizing sorrow. "She loved you more than anything in this world. But you were born out of wedlock. You were born from an affair she had before she married Dominic."
Caleb froze. His hands dropped to his sides. "An affair? With who?"
Daniel swallowed hard, his eyes darting nervously toward the door where Elena and Alexander were standing.
"With Gideon Sterling," Daniel signed.
The silence in the room was absolute, deafening, and completely apocalyptic.
Hannah staggered backward, bumping into Caleb. Caleb caught her instinctively, his mind completely failing to process the magnitude of the revelation.
"Gideon Sterling?" Caleb signed, his hands shaking violently. "The patriarch of the syndicate? The man who built the shadow network?"
"Yes," Daniel signed, his face pale. "Elena was incredibly young. She made a mistake. When she realized Gideon was a monster, she ran. She married Dominic to protect herself, to build a fortress around you, Caleb. But she was already pregnant with Hannah."

Hannah covered her mouth, a sickening, suffocating revulsion pooling in her stomach. She wasn't just the illegitimate daughter of a dead woman. She was the biological daughter of the most ruthless crime boss in Chicago history.
"Gideon found out about you, Hannah," Daniel continued, tears falling on the wooden table. "He wanted you. He wanted a blood heir to mold into his successor. Elena knew he would turn you into a weapon. So she brought you to me. She told Gideon you died in childbirth. I raised you in the shadows to protect you from the throne."
