Chapter 42 - THE BROTHER'S WRATH

Caleb’s architectural studio looked like a war zone, the shattered glass from the earlier mercenary siege crunching beneath Alexander’s boots as he and Elena rushed through the doors.

Caleb was sitting on the floor in the dark, his back against a ruined drafting table. His face was buried in his hands. The trauma of the revelation had completely shattered the quiet, confident man he had become. He looked utterly broken.

Elena stopped a few feet away, her heart aching with a profound, maternal sorrow. She knelt carefully in front of him.

Caleb didn't look up. He signed, his hands moving with slow, agonizing devastation. "She hates me. I didn't know, Elena. I swear to God, I didn't know."

"Caleb, listen to me," Elena said, her voice shaking but laced with unyielding command. She signed as she spoke, forcing him to look at her. "None of this is your fault. Daniel lied to you. Your mother lied to protect her. But right now, we do not have time to grieve. Julian Croft has taken her."

Caleb’s head snapped up. The grief in his eyes vanished, instantly replaced by a cold, terrifying, apocalyptic shock. "The Architect has Hannah?"

"He took her to the Third Archive," Alexander stated, stepping into the dim light. "He handed us an encrypted drive. If we don't transfer the remaining billion dollars of the restitution fund into his offshore accounts in forty-five minutes, he is going to execute her."

Caleb stood up. The trembling stopped. The despair was entirely eradicated, consumed by a fierce, protective, homicidal fury. She was his blood. She was the woman who had saved him. The nature of their relationship had violently changed, but his absolute, unwavering devotion to her survival had not.

He walked directly to his surviving workstation and powered on the backup generators.

"Julian thinks he is the only architect who understands that facility," Caleb signed rapidly, his eyes burning with a dark, lethal fire as the 3D blueprints of the Brooklyn Navy Yard illuminated the screens. "But he forgot one thing. I spent the last twelve hours running stress diagnostics on his design. He built an impenetrable fortress. But every fortress needs ventilation."

"Can we breach it without triggering the internal alarms?" Alexander asked, stepping closer to the screens.

"Yes," Caleb signed, typing furiously. "There is a secondary drainage culvert that connects directly to the East River. It is designed to flood the lower levels in case of a fire, but the intake valves are large enough for a person to crawl through. It bypasses the primary security grid."

Elena looked at Caleb, awe and fierce pride swelling in her chest. "We need a tactical team that operates off the books. And we need heavy firepower."

The heavy, broken studio doors swung open again. Dominic Vale stepped into the room, flanked by Luca and half a dozen heavily armed cartel enforcers carrying suppressed submachine guns and breaching charges.

"You already have an army," Dominic growled, racking a shell into his tactical shotgun. He looked at Caleb, the fierce, protective instinct of a father overriding everything else. "Nobody takes my family. Show us the door, Caleb."
