Chapter 34 - THE TRUTH ABOUT HANNAHThe silence in the atrium was deafening. Elena stared at the broken man on the floor, her entire worldview fracturing into a million pieces. Daniel Mercer wasn't the monster who had killed her sister. He was the man who had saved her.

"If you saved her," Alexander asked, his voice rough with emotion, "why did she die three years later? Why didn't you tell us?"
"Her heart," Daniel signed, looking up at them with profound sorrow. "The stress of the crash, the hiding... her heart was failing. She knew she didn't have much time. She asked me to promise two things before she died."
"What were they?" Elena whispered, tears blurring her vision.
"First, to protect the evidence until Caleb was old enough to fight his father," Daniel signed. "And second, to protect the child she left behind."
Elena’s heart stopped. She looked at Daniel, her mind desperately trying to connect the impossible dots. "The child?"
"Maya," Alexander realized, his eyes widening. "She adopted Maya."
"Not just Maya," Daniel signed, his hands shaking as he delivered the final, devastating truth. "Elena didn't just adopt a teenager. Before the crash, before the investigation... Elena had a daughter. A daughter she hid from the world to protect her from the syndicate."
Elena couldn't breathe. "A daughter? Where is she?"
Daniel looked directly into Elena’s eyes, the tears falling freely now.
"She is standing outside, waiting in the car," Daniel signed slowly. "Her name is Hannah."

The world completely fell away. Elena collapsed onto her knees, her hands covering her mouth, a ragged, agonizing sob tearing from her throat. Hannah. The beautiful, fierce waitress who had saved Caleb. The woman who was about to marry him. She wasn't just Daniel Mercer's daughter. She was Elena’s biological niece.
"Oh my god," Alexander whispered, stumbling backward, the reality of the situation crashing over him like a tidal wave. "Hannah is Caleb’s cousin."
