Chapter 36 - THE LIES WE CARRY

Elena stepped forward into the dim light of the Bridge House atrium. Every tactical instinct she possessed—the brilliant, calculating mind that had dismantled empires—was screaming at her to find a loophole. But as she looked at Caleb’s confused face and Hannah’s warm, trusting eyes, she knew there was no algorithm for this kind of devastation.

Caleb raised his hands again, his brow furrowing deeply. "Elena? Alexander? What happened? Why is Daniel crying?"

Hannah stepped closer to her father, her hand slipping from Caleb’s grasp. She reached out to Daniel, her voice laced with sudden panic. "Dad? Are you hurt? What did they do to you?"

Daniel couldn't look at her. The man who had faced down hit squads and built a shadow network was utterly broken by the sound of his daughter’s voice. He kept his eyes locked on the polished floor, tears dripping onto the marble.

Elena swallowed the jagged lump in her throat. She looked at Alexander, desperately seeking a lifeline. But Alexander’s dark eyes were filled with a profound, agonizing sorrow. He gave her a microscopic shake of his head. We cannot hide this.

"Caleb. Hannah," Elena began, her voice trembling slightly before she forced it into a steady, uncompromising register. She raised her hands to sign alongside her words, ensuring absolute clarity. "There is something you both need to know. Something Daniel has been hiding for twenty-five years."

Hannah’s protective instincts flared. She stepped between Elena and her father. "Whatever my dad did in the past, he did it to survive. You aren't going to punish him for it."

"Hannah," Daniel finally signed, his hands shaking so violently he could barely form the shapes. He looked up at her, his eyes hollowed out by grief. "They aren't here to punish me. They are here because they found out who you are."

Hannah froze. "Who I am? I'm your daughter."

"No," Daniel signed, the single word hanging in the air like a guillotine blade. "You aren't."

Caleb went completely still. His sharp, intelligent eyes darted from Daniel’s weeping face to Elena’s rigid posture. He was an architect; he understood how to read structures, how to see the foundation beneath the surface. He looked at Hannah’s dark, expressive eyes. He looked at the subtle curve of her jawline.

And then, Caleb looked at Elena.

The pieces clicked together with the terrifying, violent force of a collapsing building.

Caleb staggered backward, pressing a hand to his chest as if he had been shot. He looked at Hannah, his eyes wide with an apocalyptic, soul-crushing horror.

"No," Caleb signed frantically, backing away from her. "No, no, no. Tell me it isn't true, Elena. Tell me!"

"I'm so sorry, Caleb," Elena whispered, tears finally breaking free and spilling down her cheeks. "Hannah... Hannah is your mother's biological daughter. She is your half-sister."
