Chapter 52 - THE FAREWELL IN THE SNOW

The first snow of the season began to fall over Chicago, dusting the streets in a pristine, freezing white.

Caleb stood in the courtyard of Bridge House, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets. He looked up at the mural his mother had commissioned, his heart aching with a profound, unbearable sorrow.

He heard the crunch of footsteps on the fresh snow behind him.

He didn't need to turn around to know it was Hannah. He could feel her presence, a magnetic pull that was now completely, tragically forbidden.

Hannah stopped a few feet away. She was wearing a heavy, dark wool overcoat. She looked different. The warm, compassionate waitress he had fallen in love with was gone, replaced by a woman who had just accepted the weight of a criminal crown to save her family.

"You shouldn't be here," Caleb signed, his hands moving stiffly, refusing to look at her.

"I came to say goodbye, Caleb," Hannah replied, not signing back, speaking aloud to maintain the agonizing distance between them.

Caleb finally turned to look at her. The devastation in his eyes was absolute. "Goodbye? Where are you going?"

"I am taking a position with the Bennett Holding Corporation," Hannah said, her voice hollow and practiced. "I am leaving the city for a while. Clara Bennett is relocating me to a secure facility to manage... new assets."

Caleb’s brow furrowed. "Clara Bennett? The logistics CEO? Hannah, what are you talking about?"

"It’s better this way, Caleb," Hannah said, tears welling in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She couldn't tell him the truth. She couldn't tell him that she was stepping into the shadows of the Sterling Syndicate to protect him from the crossfire.

"Hannah, please," Caleb signed, taking a desperate step toward her. "I know this is a nightmare. I know the truth is horrifying. But you are still the woman who saved me. We can figure this out. We can find a way to be a family."

"We can't be a family, Caleb," Hannah whispered, her voice breaking. "Every time I look at you, I see the man I was going to marry. And every time you look at me, you see the blood of the man who ordered your mother's murder. We are poisoned."

Caleb stopped. The brutal, agonizing truth of her words hit him like a physical blow.

"I love you, Caleb," Hannah said, a single tear finally slipping down her freezing cheek. "I will always love you. But I have to go into the dark now."

Hannah turned and walked away, her dark coat disappearing into the falling snow. Caleb didn't follow her. He stood in the courtyard, completely alone, the snow burying the ashes of the life they were supposed to build.
