Chapter 41 - THE COUNTDOWN IN THE DARK

The concrete floor was freezing, bleeding the warmth from Hannah’s body as she slowly regained consciousness. She opened her eyes to absolute, suffocating darkness, the metallic taste of a sedative lingering bitterly on her tongue. Her wrists were bound behind her back with industrial zip-ties. She was sitting in a windowless, soundproof holding cell deep within the subterranean labyrinth of the Third Archive.
Her physical captivity, however, was nothing compared to the apocalyptic wreckage of her mind.
Half-sister.
The word echoed in the dark, a jagged, rusted blade twisting in her chest. Everything she knew, everything she had built her identity upon, had been incinerated in a matter of seconds. Daniel Mercer was not her father. He was her warden. Elena Vale was not just Caleb’s mother; she was the ghost who had birthed her and abandoned her to the shadows. And Caleb. The man she loved, the man who had proposed to her with trembling hands and absolute devotion, shared her blood.
A heavy steel door hissed open, flooding the small cell with blinding, sterile white light.
Hannah squinted, her eyes watering. Standing in the doorway was Julian Croft. He wore an immaculate bespoke suit, looking utterly detached from the brutality of the underground fortress he commanded.
"You have your mother's resilience," Julian observed smoothly, stepping into the cell. "Elena always possessed a remarkable ability to survive the impossible. I suppose it is a genetic trait."
"You don't know anything about me," Hannah spat, her voice hoarse but dripping with venom.
"I know that your existence was a closely guarded secret that nearly cost Gideon his empire," Julian smiled, a cold, empty expression. "And I know that right now, your supposed family is sitting in a penthouse, staring at a decryption drive, trying to decide if your life is worth a billion dollars."
"Alexander won't pay you," Hannah said, lifting her chin defiantly. "Elena won't let him. They will tear this facility apart brick by brick before they surrender to you."
May you like
"They don't have a choice," Julian replied casually, checking his platinum wristwatch. "I gave them an hour. If the offshore transfer is not completed, this facility will initiate a localized purge protocol. I will vanish, and you will be incinerated along with the remaining physical evidence of Gideon's shadow network. Let us see how much blood actually matters to them."
Julian turned and walked out, the heavy steel door slamming shut, plunging Hannah back into the terrifying, absolute dark. She closed her eyes, forcing herself to breathe. She couldn't rely on Elena or Alexander. She had to survive. For herself.
