Chapter 51 - THE DEAL WITH THE DEVIL

The coffee shop felt like it was suspended in a vacuum. Hannah sat across from Clara Bennett, the legal documents of succession resting between them like a ticking bomb.
"Partner?" Hannah repeated, her voice laced with deep, undeniable suspicion. "You want the sole heir of the Sterling Syndicate to be your partner? A few days ago, Julian Croft was extorting your company for millions of dollars."
"Julian was a parasite," Clara stated flawlessly, taking a slow sip of her coffee. "He didn't want to build an empire; he wanted to hoard a shadow economy. I operate in the light. The Bennett Logistics network is entirely legitimate, but the Sterling infrastructure you just inherited controls the politicians, the judges, and the offshore holding banks. Separated, we are vulnerable. Together, we own the board."
"And if I say no?" Hannah challenged, her dark eyes flashing. "If I just tear up these papers and walk away?"
"You can't walk away from blood, Hannah," Clara replied, her voice dropping into a cold, pragmatic hum. "The New York families already know Julian is dead. The moment they realize Gideon Sterling left a blood heir, they will send hit squads to Chicago. They won't ask if you want the throne; they will simply kill you to ensure you never claim it."
Hannah’s breath hitched. She looked out the window at Bridge House. She thought about Caleb. She thought about Daniel. If she ran, she would bring the war directly to the people she loved.
"I won't run a trafficking network," Hannah said, her voice shaking but resolute. "I won't be a monster."
"Neither will I," Clara agreed instantly, her dark eyes locking onto Hannah with absolute, terrifying sincerity. "My grandfather built his empire on blackmail. I am tearing it down. We will use the Sterling offshore accounts to systematically bankrupt the remaining syndicates. We use the monster’s money to kill the monsters."
Hannah looked at Clara. She saw the fierce, unyielding intellect of an apex predator. Clara wasn't offering her a way out; she was offering her a weapon.

"Okay," Hannah whispered, her hands trembling slightly as she reached out to shake Clara’s hand. "We dismantle them. All of them."
"Welcome to the Bennett Corporation, Ms. Mercer," Clara smiled, a cold, triumphant expression. "We have a lot of work to do."
