Chapter 24 - THE ASHES OF VICTOR'S EMPIREThe federal indictment of Victor Raines was the most highly publicized legal spectacle in Chicago’s recent history. The dossier compiled by Elena Vale, corroborated by Maya’s testimony and the captured mercenaries, created an airtight federal RICO case. Victor’s extensive network of offshore accounts, illegal kickbacks, and exploitation of state-run facilities was dismantled piece by piece.

Victor was denied bail. He sat in a federal holding cell, stripped of his bespoke suits and his arrogant smile, facing the reality of a life sentence behind bars.
Two months later, Caleb and Hannah sat in Lena Duarte’s office. Maya sat across from them, looking radiant and profoundly at peace.
"The federal judge officially approved the asset forfeiture," Lena signed, her expression triumphant. "Over forty million dollars recovered from Victor’s shell corporations has been legally routed back to the Vale Community Trust. The state facilities Victor exploited are receiving massive restitution payouts."
"And Bridge House?" Caleb asked, his hands moving with sharp anticipation.
"Fully funded," Lena smiled, signing back. "The trust has officially approved your architectural blueprints for the renovation, Caleb. Bridge House is getting its technology lab, the new community theater, and the structural repairs. And Dominic formally recused himself from the financial oversight committee. He appointed Daniel Mercer as the new community liaison."
Hannah beamed, squeezing Caleb’s hand.
Maya looked at Caleb, touching the silver sparrow pendant around her neck. "I am officially dropping the 'Vance' alias," Maya signed, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "The court restored my original birth record today. I am Maya Silva again. Your mother gave me my life back, Caleb. And you finished the job."
"You are family, Maya," Caleb signed, his expression warm and absolute. "You always will be."
That evening, Caleb and Hannah walked along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The autumn air was crisp, the city skyline glowing beautifully against the dark water.
"My father is impossible to deal with right now," Hannah laughed, wrapping her scarf tighter. "He is so excited about the Bridge House renovations he’s already drafting syllabus plans for three new woodworking classes."
"He deserves it," Caleb signed. He stopped walking and turned to face her. The wind ruffled his dark hair. He looked nervous, an emotion Hannah rarely saw in him anymore.
"What is it?" Hannah asked softly.
Caleb reached into his jacket pocket. He didn't pull out a document or a blueprint. He pulled out a small, dark velvet box.
"Hannah," Caleb signed, his hands trembling slightly, but his eyes locked onto hers with absolute, unwavering devotion. "You were the first person who ever truly heard me. You didn't try to fix me. You just loved me. I don't want to spend another day of my life without you by my side."
He opened the box, revealing a stunning, elegantly designed diamond ring.

"Will you marry me?"
Hannah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. Tears spilled over her cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second. She raised her hands and signed, enthusiastically and joyfully: "Yes. Absolutely, yes."
