Chapter 13 - THE WAITRESS WHO CHOSE HER OWN FUTURE

Hannah received her graduate degree in nonprofit management the following spring.

Daniel sat in the front row at the ceremony.

Caleb sat beside him.

Both men were smiling.

Hannah walked across the stage wearing a black graduation gown.

When she received her diploma, Daniel signed enthusiastically:

“That's my girl!”

Caleb laughed.

Then raised both hands in the visual applause commonly used in the Deaf community.

Hannah spotted them.

Her eyes filled.

For years, she'd worked nights at Bellissimo.

Attended classes.

Completed assignments on trains.

And saved money wherever she could.

She'd never expected a degree ceremony to feel so emotional.

But her father was there.

Caleb was there.

And for the first time in a long time, her future felt open.

After the ceremony, they gathered outside the university building.

Daniel hugged her tightly.

He signed:

“I'm proud of you.”

Hannah smiled through tears.

“Thank you, Dad.”

Caleb approached carrying flowers.

She raised an eyebrow.

“Roses?”

He smiled.

“Too predictable?”

“A little.”

He signed:

“I considered buying you a building.”

Hannah burst into laughter.

“Don't you dare.”

Caleb grinned.

“I thought you'd say that.”

He handed her the flowers.

Then signed:

“Congratulations.”

Her expression softened.

“Thank you.”

For several months, they had been dating.

Quietly.

Without publicity.

Without the spectacle that sometimes followed the Vale surname.

They went to bookstores.

Small restaurants.

Art exhibitions.

And occasionally spent entire Sunday afternoons sketching ideas at Caleb's studio.

Hannah loved the way he noticed details.

The slope of a sidewalk.

The placement of a doorway.

The way poor lighting could make conversations more difficult for people who relied on visual communication.

Caleb loved Hannah's independence.

Her humor.

Her compassion.

And the fact that she never treated him as a problem to solve.

Sometimes they disagreed.

Hannah could be stubborn.

Caleb could become withdrawn when stressed.

They were learning to talk through those moments rather than pretend they didn't happen.

One evening, Hannah told him she'd been offered a position with a neighborhood development nonprofit.

He smiled immediately.

“That's wonderful.”

She nodded.

“It's a program management role.”

“Do you want it?”

“Yes.”

“Then you should take it.”

Hannah hesitated.

“It pays less than my current job at first.”

Caleb studied her.

“Does that worry you?”

“A little.”

He nodded.

“Understandable.”

She looked down.

Then signed:

“I don't want you offering to cover everything.”

Caleb smiled gently.

“I know.”

Hannah raised an eyebrow.

“Do you?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Then signed:

“I can help you think through the decision if you want. But it's yours.”

Her expression softened.

“That's exactly what I wanted.”

For several seconds, they stood quietly.

Then Hannah looked toward him.

“Caleb?”

“Yes?”

“Can I tell you something?”

He smiled.

“Always.”

“When I first met you at Bellissimo, I thought you were going to be another rich man who needed somebody to manage his life.”

Caleb laughed.

“Fair.”

“But you're not.”

He looked toward her.

She continued.

“You know what you want. You know how to work for it. And you don't expect me to make the world comfortable for you.”

His expression softened.

Then he signed:

“And when I first met you, I thought you might be the only person in that restaurant willing to look me in the eyes.”

Hannah smiled.

“Was I?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“Really?”

Caleb smiled.

“My father looked at me.”

He paused.

“He just didn't see me.”

Hannah's eyes filled.

Caleb continued.

“You did.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Hannah stepped closer.

And kissed him.

It was gentle.

Warm.

Unhurried.

When they separated, Caleb smiled.

Then signed:

“Does this mean you'll have dinner with me again?”

Hannah laughed.

“Only if you promise to order something besides ribeye.”

He looked offended.

“That's an unreasonable demand.”

May you like

She burst into laughter.

And for a moment, the world felt wonderfully ordinary.
