Chapter 48 - THE BLOOD OF THE MONSTER

The revelation shattered the very foundation of their existence. Hannah was not just Caleb’s half-sister. She was Julian Croft’s half-sister. She carried the blood of the Sterling Syndicate in her veins.
Hannah turned and ran out of the safe house, ignoring the security guards, ignoring Alexander’s shouts. She burst into the freezing Illinois morning, collapsing onto the frozen grass, her chest heaving as she vomited into the bushes.
The sheer, visceral horror of her lineage was entirely consuming. The man who had ordered Elena's death, the man who had built the human trafficking hubs—that was her father.
Caleb walked out of the house a moment later. He didn't run to her. He stood a few feet away, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets. The dynamic between them was completely broken, ruined by the toxic secrets of their parents.
"Are you okay?" Caleb finally signed, his hands moving stiffly.
Hannah wiped her mouth, sitting up on the freezing grass. She looked at Caleb, the man she loved with every fiber of her being. The man she could never have.
"I have his blood, Caleb," Hannah whispered, her voice a hollow, haunting echo. "I am a Sterling. I am a monster."
"You are not a monster," Caleb signed fiercely, stepping closer, though he still didn't touch her. "You are Hannah. You are the woman who stood up to my father. You are the woman who saved my life. Blood does not dictate who you are."
"Yes, it does," Hannah cried, tears streaming down her face. "It ruined us, Caleb. It destroyed everything."
Before Caleb could answer, a sleek, black town car pulled up the long driveway of the safe house. The heavy doors opened, and Marcus stepped out, looking grim and entirely professional.
He walked up to Caleb and Hannah, handing a thick, sealed legal envelope to Caleb.
"This just arrived at the studio via courier," Marcus said quietly. "It’s from Julian Croft’s estate lawyers. The dead-man's switch was activated when he died in the Archive."
Caleb frowned, tearing open the envelope. He pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment paper. It was a certified legal document, stamped and notarized by the federal courts.
Caleb read the document, his blood running completely cold. He looked up at Hannah, his eyes wide with absolute, unadulterated shock.
"What is it?" Hannah asked, scrambling to her feet.
"It's a declaration of succession," Caleb signed, his hands trembling as he handed her the paper. "Julian knew about you, Hannah. He knew you were Gideon's daughter."
Hannah took the paper, her eyes scanning the legal jargon. Her breath hitched in her throat as she read the final paragraph.

Julian Croft, the last legitimate heir to the Sterling Syndicate, had formally named Hannah Mercer as his sole successor.
She wasn't just a hidden daughter anymore. She was the legal, undisputed owner of the remains of the Sterling empire.
