Chapter 17 - THE ROAD TO MILWAUKEEThe drive to Milwaukee was thick with an electric, unresolved tension. Rain lashed against the windshield of Caleb’s SUV as they drove north on I-94. Hannah sat in the passenger seat, her eyes shifting between the slick road and the man beside her.

Caleb’s knuckles were white on the steering wheel. He hadn't signed a word in over an hour.

Hannah reached across the center console and gently rested her hand on his shoulder. He glanced at her, offering a tight, fragile smile before returning his eyes to the road.

"Are you okay?" Hannah signed with her free hand, keeping her movements small and within his peripheral vision.

Caleb exhaled a long breath. At the next red light, he took his hands off the wheel and signed: "I spent thirteen years mourning a woman who chose to let me believe she was dead. I keep asking myself... was I not enough for her to stay? Was I just a casualty?"

Hannah’s heart broke at the raw, devastating vulnerability in his eyes.

"Caleb, look at me," Hannah said, speaking and signing simultaneously so he could catch every nuance of her conviction. "Your mother fought to create Bridge House so you wouldn't have to grow up feeling invisible. A woman who loves her son that fiercely does not abandon him by choice. If she faked her death, she did it because staying would have put you in a grave beside her."

Caleb stared at her. His eyes filled with unshed tears, and he slowly nodded, drawing immense strength from her absolute certainty.

When they arrived in Milwaukee, the city was bustling. The Deaf arts festival had taken over a large community center near the lakefront. Under any other circumstances, Caleb would have been thrilled by the vibrant displays of visual storytelling, the tactile art installations, and the hundreds of people conversing in fluent, beautiful ASL.

But today, they were hunting for a ghost.

"Lena said Maya Vance is a registered vendor here," Hannah said, checking her phone as they navigated the crowded exhibition hall. "She runs an independent architectural restoration business. Let's check the eastern gallery."

They wove through the crowd, their eyes scanning the vendor booths. Finally, near a large window overlooking the lake, they saw it.

A modest booth displaying intricate, beautifully drafted architectural blueprints for accessible community spaces. Standing behind the table was a young woman in her mid-twenties. She had dark, expressive eyes, a messy ponytail, and she was currently signing animatedly with a customer.

Resting against her collarbone, catching the afternoon light, was a delicate silver sparrow pendant.

Caleb froze. The air completely left his lungs. He felt like he was staring at a living, breathing extension of the mother he had lost.

Hannah stepped close to him. "That’s her," she signed.

Caleb took a slow, shuddering breath. He walked directly toward the booth. The young woman finished her conversation with the customer and turned. When her eyes landed on Caleb, the welcoming smile on her face instantly vanished.

She stared at him, her eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing shock. Her hands dropped to her sides.

Caleb raised his hands. He signed slowly, his fingers trembling. "My name is Caleb Vale. And I think you are wearing my mother's necklace."

Maya Vance took a staggering step backward. Tears instantly flooded her eyes. She looked at Caleb, then at Hannah, and finally, she raised her hands.

"I knew you would come someday," Maya signed, her hands shaking violently. "She told me you would."
