Chapter 50 - The Shadow Above the Horizon

The boat roared into the estate's private cove at full throttle, slamming against the dock bumpers. Sylvester didn't wait for the lines to be tied; he leaped onto the wooden planks and sprinted up the winding stone path toward the manor, Marcus right at his heels.
The estate was eerily quiet. The searchlights on the lawn were out. The perimeter sentries lay unconscious—not dead, but incapacitated by some advanced neuro-disruptive gas that still hung in faint, purplish mists over the manicured grass.
"Non-lethal airborne agent," Marcus coughed, pulling an oxygen mask over his face. "Military grade. Experimental syndicate tech."
Sylvester kicked the shattered front doors open, his heart pounding with a terror that no army or financial cartel had ever inflicted on him. "ELENA! LUCAS!"
The grand ballroom—the very room where we had planned our future only days ago—was illuminated only by the cold, pale moonlight streaming through the shattered skylights.
Standing in the center of the room was Elena.
She was on her knees, her hands bound in high-tensile carbon restraints behind her back. Her face was bruised, her evening gown torn at the shoulder, but her eyes were wide, furious, and blazing with defiance.
Ten feet away, held by the collar of his jacket by an operative clad in full-body active-camo armor, was Lucas.
The boy wasn't crying. His teeth were gritted, and in his small, bleeding hand, he held his father’s signet locket, its iridescent obsidian surface glowing with an intense, pulsing blue light. The cipher had activated—triggered by the boy's spiked adrenaline and blood.
Above the shattered glass dome of the ballroom, hovering entirely silent with no engine sound, was a massive, triangular stealth dreadnought gunship, its black hull blotting out the stars.
A voice descended from the shadows near the ballroom fireplace—smooth, aristocratic, and dripping with venomous amusement.
A woman stepped into the light. She was dressed in an ivory military coat, her striking features cold and aristocratic, holding a silver walking stick identical to Rostov’s.
"You were so focused on Alexei, Sylvester," the woman purred softly. "You forgot that Alexei was merely my younger brother. I am Grand Duchess Catherine Romanova. And Julian Vance’s secret belongs to me."
Sylvester froze, his entire body locked in lethal tension.
Before he could take a step, three sharp red targeting lasers appeared simultaneously on his chest, perfectly centered over his heart.
Catherine smiled, raising a slender hand. "One twitch, Mr. Kane, and we leave your corpse here alongside the woman. The boy walks with me onto the ship, and Julian's empire falls into my hands. Make your choice."
Lucas looked up, meeting Sylvester’s eyes across the ruined marble floor.

"Dad," the boy whispered through his bruised lips. "Don't let them have it."
The red lasers on Sylvester’s chest locked solid, and Catherine’s finger gave the signal.
