Chapter 43 - Midnight on the Waterfront

By eleven o'clock, a heavy coastal fog had rolled in off the bay, cloaking the cliffs in an impenetrable shroud of white and gray. The countdown on the terminal stood at less than forty minutes.
Down at the private deep-water pier below the Kane estate, the water lapped rhythmically against the pylons. Sylvester stood at the end of the dock, dressed in a long charcoal coat, the wind whipping his dark hair. Behind him, twelve operators from his personal vanguard were positioned in the shadows of the boathouse, armed with suppressed carbines and thermal sights, utterly motionless.
Through the mist, the low, throbbing hum of twin marine diesel engines vibrated through the boards beneath our feet. A sleek, matte-black interceptor launch—unmarked, bristling with radar arrays—emerged from the darkness like a ghost ship. It drifted alongside the pier, its mooring lines thrown with military precision.
A ramp lowered with a hydraulic hiss.
Five men stepped onto the wooden deck. Four were mercenaries clad in tactical carbon-weave vests, their weapons slung low across their chests. At their head walked a tall, lean man with slicked-silver hair, an immaculate tailored cashmere overcoat, and eyes as dead and gray as winter slush. In his gloved hand, he carried a polished ebony cane with an ivory skull handle.
"Sylvester Kane," the man said, his accent cultured, heavily tinged with old Baltic nobility. "You have caused our principals a great deal of inconvenience. We gave Sterling Vance twenty million dollars to locate Julian's brat quietly. You executed him, ruined our shell corporations, and dared to set up a kingdom on stolen dirt."
Sylvester did not move. His hands remained buried in his coat pockets. "You have thirty seconds to turn your engines around and leave my territorial waters, Baron Rostov."
Rostov chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. "You misunderstand your position, Mr. Kane. You rule the backrooms of this city through fear and political leverage. But the Syndicate owns the oceans. Out there, past the light of your cliffs, sits the *Grand Leviathan*. She carries twenty-four cruise missiles calibrated to this exact coordinate. Hand over Julian Vance’s bastard and the key around his neck. If you refuse, we will erase this entire estate, along with everyone inside it."
Sylvester took a single step forward. The air around him seemed to drop ten degrees. "You made a fatal mistake, Rostov."
"Oh? And what might that be?" Rostov smirked, raising his cane.

"You assumed I was defending this hill with leverage," Sylvester whispered.
Before Rostov could blink, the night erupted.
