Chapter 49 - Betrayal at Sea

Before the first mercenary could raise his barrel, an ear-splitting explosion tore through the lower hull of the *Iron Pavilion*.

The entire steel platform shuddered violently, throwing half the guests and guards off their feet. The crystal chandeliers swung wildly from the ceiling, one of them tearing loose and crashing onto the Persian rugs in a shower of shattered glass and sparks.

The lights went black, plunged instantly into the emergency red glow of backup sirens.

"Boss, breach charges on the support pylons detonated!" Marcus yelled over the wailing alarms, pulling two suppressed pistols from hidden sleeves in his coat—weapons the guards had failed to find. "The submersible team did their job!"

Sylvester moved with terrifying, fluid speed. While Alexei scrambled backward toward his personal security detail, Sylvester lunged forward. In three strides, he crossed the gap to the dais. A mercenary stepped into his path, aiming a submachine gun; Sylvester seized the barrel, forced it upward as a burst ripped through the ceiling, and snapped the man's wrist with a sickening crunch.

Using the mercenary as a human shield, Sylvester drew a heavy tactical blade from beneath his coat and drove it cleanly through the armor gap of the second guard.

"Kane!" Alexei screamed from behind the iron blast doors of the VIP elevator. "You will die in the sea! You will never make it back to shore!"

The blast doors slid shut, sealing the Grand Duke inside his escape pod.

"Platform stability is compromised! Structural failure in four minutes!" Marcus shouted, firing two precise rounds into approaching hostiles who were trying to rally.

"To the launch!" Sylvester commanded, turning toward the exterior deck.

They fought their way through the smoke-filled corridors, the platform listing ten degrees into the churning ocean as sea water poured through the blown ballast tanks. Sylvester was an elemental force in the red-lit darkness, leaving a trail of broken bodies and shattered resistance behind him.

They burst onto the rain-slicked landing deck just as their armored tactical boat slammed alongside the gangway, manned by Sylvester's elite divers.

"Boss! Get on!" the pilot roared over the screaming wind.

Sylvester and Marcus leapt across the churning gap as the *Iron Pavilion* groggily groaned, its massive support columns buckling under thousands of tons of twisted steel.

As their boat accelerated toward the mainland, cutting through the black, foaming swells, Sylvester looked back at the burning silhouette of the platform sinking into the bay.

He keyed his tactical comm to the estate. "Elena. Status."

Silence answered him. Only static and a strange, high-frequency digital hum whistled through the earpiece.

"Elena!" Sylvester barked, his face darkening with acute dread. "Report!"
