Chapter 44 - The Breach at Highcliff

High above the bay, inside the main manor, the sound of distant suppressed gunfire rattled against the heavy panoramic windows.

"Mom?" Lucas asked, standing beside me in the master study. His small hand gripped my sleeve, but he didn't cry. The boy had endured too much cruelty in his young life to cower now; instead, his jaw was set, his chin lifted with the quiet defiance of his bloodline.

"I'm here, sweetheart. I'm right here," I told him, dropping to one knee and pulling him into a tight embrace.

Suddenly, the red emergency klaxon throughout the house went dead. The ambient lights flickered and died, leaving only the pale moonlight slicing through the blinds.

A radio on the desk crackled to life, Marcus’s voice strained through static: *"Mrs. Kane! Divert team breached the eastern conservatory! Rostov sent a secondary infiltration squad up the sea cliffs while Sylvester held the dock! They're inside the house—fall back to the panic room immediately!"*

The comm cut off with a blast of static.

Footsteps—rapid, booted, tactical—echoed from the long marble gallery just outside the study. Glass shattered on the floor below.

I looked at the heavy mahogany door. The panic room was across the hall, thirty feet away, entirely exposed. If I tried to run with Lucas in the open, we would be gunned down in seconds.

Ten years of poverty, ten years of enduring Victoria Caldwell’s slaps, sneers, and humiliating insults had forced me to be quiet and endure. But looking at the shadow moving beneath the crack of the door, something inside me broke—and in its place arose an iron resolve I didn't know I possessed.

I walked swiftly to Sylvester’s desk, reached into the hidden compartment behind the lower drawer—the one he had shown me three days ago—and pulled out a heavy, matte-black semiautomatic pistol. I racked the slide, chambering a round just as he had taught me.

"Lucas," I whispered, pointing to the reinforced steel safe cabinet built into the masonry behind the bookshelf. "Inside. Lock the inner bolt and do not make a sound until you hear Sylvester’s voice or mine."

"Mom, don't leave me," he begged quietly.

"I am standing between you and the door, Lucas," I said, kissing his forehead with fierce finality. "No one touches you again. Ever."

He slid inside, and the heavy door latched shut.

A second later, the study door was kicked open with splintering violence.
