Chapter 12 - The Double-Edged Blade

The Sterling name carried a weight that even Highgate’s elite spoke of only in hushed, reverent whispers. Julian Sterling was Sylvester’s oldest competitor, an international shipping magnate whose fortune had been built on shadow treaties and hostile takeovers across four continents. If Victoria Caldwell had run into his arms, it meant she had traded her pride for the only weapon capable of striking back at us.
That evening, the library was submerged in the golden glow of amber lamps. Maps of the northern commercial ports and zoning blueprints for the foundation's youth community centers were spread across Sylvester’s massive walnut desk.
"Julian Sterling does not care about Victoria," I remarked, pacing the perimeter of the room with a mug of black coffee in my hands. "She is nothing to him. A discarded socialite with ruined credit."
"She is a pawn with a grudge, Elena," Sylvester replied, leaning back in his leather chair, unbuttoning his vest. "And in the hands of an experienced grandmaster, a vengeful pawn can force a king to move out of position. Sterling wants the northern rail corridor. My foundation gave you the municipal deed to build community housing right where he planned to construct his private cargo terminal."
"So he’s using Victoria’s old estate claims to stall construction," I realized, the picture becoming crystal clear. "If he ties the foundation up in litigation for eighteen months, the city’s tax subsidies expire, and the land automatically reverts to an open public auction."
Sylvester looked up at me, his dark eyes gleaming with an intensity that took my breath away. "Precisely. He thinks he can bleed you through legal fees, knowing you wouldn't want to use my capital for what you consider your personal project."
He knew me so well. I had fought tooth and nail to keep my community work independent from Sylvester’s personal treasury, determined never to be seen as a kept woman riding the coat-tails of an oligarch. Sterling knew that pride, and he was weaponizing it against me.
"Then he underestimates what I am willing to do to protect Lucas and the children who need that shelter," I said coldly.
Sylvester stood up, closing the distance between us until his towering silhouette cast a shadow over me. He reached out, lifting my chin with a gentle, firm finger.
"Never fight a sewer rat with clean gloves, Elena," he whispered, his voice dark and melodic. "Victoria wants a war in the courts. Julian Sterling wants a war in the markets. But they forgot one fundamental truth."
"What truth?"
"They are fighting on my soil," Sylvester said, his thumb brushing across my lower lip. "Tomorrow night is the Metropolitan Heritage Gala. Julian Sterling will be there to officially introduce Victoria as his new director of philanthropic development. We are going to attend."
May you like
"Together?" I asked.
"Together," Sylvester answered, his eyes burning with absolute certainty. "And this time, Elena, nobody will ask you to show an invitation."
