Chapter 30 - The Shadow Behind the Throne

Before Sylvester could extract another word, the ceiling above the mezzanine groaned and collapsed in an avalanche of burning oak beams. Sylvester was forced to throw himself backward as a wall of fire separated him from Sterling.

Through the roaring curtain of flames, Sterling Caldwell let out one final, manic laugh before the floor gave way beneath him, swallowing him into the roaring inferno of the basement below.

"Sylvester!" I screamed from the front doors, holding Lucas tightly against my chest as burning rafters crashed down around us. "We have to go! The entire roof is coming down!"

Sylvester vaulted over the flaming balustrade, landing heavily on the ground floor with a roll, coughing through the suffocating smoke. He grabbed my arm, shielding both me and Lucas with his wide frame, and propelled us through the shattered entrance just as the grand chandelier fell with a cataclysmic crash, obliterating the foyer behind us.

We burst out into the pouring rain, tumbling onto the muddy gravel as the cold water washed over our soot-covered faces.

Behind us, the ancestral Caldwell manor burned like a titanic funeral pyre, its roaring flames painting the stormy midnight sky in horrific shades of orange and blood-red.

"Is he gone?" Lucas whispered, burying his face into Sylvester’s chest as the large man lifted him effortlessly into his arms, holding him with a tenderness that defied the violent destruction around us.

"He's gone, Lucas. You're safe now," Sylvester murmured, his voice trembling with an emotion I had never heard from him before. He pulled me close with his free arm, pressing his lips to my temple. "You're both safe."

In the distance, the sirens of Sylvester’s approaching extraction convoy cut through the storm, headlights sweeping through the dense pine trees.

We took a collective breath, the nightmare finally seeming to break.

Then, a sudden, unnatural stillness prickled the hairs on the back of my neck.

High on the wooded ridge overlooking the burning estate, a single red laser dot pierced through the thick veil of rain. It swept across the muddy ground, glided over Sylvester's shoulder, and settled squarely onto the center of Lucas’s small, soaked chest.

Sylvester’s eyes widened in instant, paralyzing horror. "SNIPER! GET DOWN—"

A sharp, deafening crack tore through the thunder.
