Chapter 15 - The Anatomy of Fear

Sterling turned sharply to his personal assistant, who was frantically tapping on a tablet screen a few yards away. The assistant looked up, his face drained of all color, nodding once in terrified confirmation.

"You played the city council," Sterling snarled, dropping his suave veneer. "That requires mayoral executive privilege. The Mayor wouldn't dare cross me."

"The Mayor didn't cross you," Sylvester said, tilting his head with chilling arrogance. "I crossed you. You assumed Elena was an amateur because she cares for the poor, Julian. You forgot that she spent five years managing municipal compliance before she ever set foot in my house. She knows the legal labyrinth of this city better than your ten-thousand-dollar-an-hour attorneys."

I stood tall beside Sylvester, feeling an electric surge of triumph. We hadn't just beaten them; we had outsmarted them using their own bureaucratic weapons.

Victoria looked between Sterling and us, realizing her last hope of vengeance had just evaporated into thin air. "Julian... you promised me! You said you would crush them!"

"Be silent!" Sterling snapped at her, his voice harsh and dismissive. He brushed her hand off his coat like she were an annoying insect. "You are useless to me now."

Victoria staggered back, looking around the room. The very same socialites who once competed for an invitation to her tea parties were now averting their eyes, whispering behind their diamond-encrusted fans, smirking at her second, public humiliation.

"You ruined me," Victoria breathed, looking directly at me, her tears streaking her heavy foundation. "You and your filthy little beggar boy! You took everything from me!"

The word had barely left her mouth when two plainclothes security officers, bearing the Vance emblem on their lapels, materialized at her sides. They gripped her arms with iron precision.

"Escort Mrs. Caldwell off the premises," Sylvester ordered, his voice cold and flat. "Revoke her membership from every club under the Vance conglomerate. If she is seen within five hundred yards of Ms. Ross or Lucas again, do not call the police. Call Walter."

The implication was deadly clear. Victoria went limp, sobbing hysterically as the guards dragged her out through the side exits, the heavy doors slamming shut behind her, cutting off her shrill cries forever.

Sterling adjusted his cuffs, his face an impenetrable mask of pure malice. "This isn't over, Sylvester. You may have won the municipal parcel. But when you build your glass castle, remember that the stones come from the earth. And I own the earth."

"Try me, Julian," Sylvester replied without a shred of hesitation. "I've buried better men than you."
