Chapter 40 - The Shadow from the East

Three weeks later, the morning sun rose bright and crisp over the newly acquired Vance Estate—a magnificent seventy-acre sanctuary nestled along the coastal cliffs, far removed from the corruption of the city.
The scars from our ordeal had begun to heal. Sylvester’s shoulder was knitting cleanly under the care of the world's best physicians, though a jagged, silver scar remained as an eternal reminder of the bullet he had taken for my son. Lucas was thriving, running across the manicured lawns with his golden retriever, his laughter ringing across the terraces—a sound that filled the empty, hollow spaces of my heart with warmth I had never thought possible.
I stood on the marble veranda, holding two cups of steaming black coffee, watching the ocean waves crash against the rocks below. Sylvester stepped out from the French doors behind me, wearing a simple black cashmere sweater, his arm moving with renewed strength as he reached out and took a cup from my hand.
He didn't say a word; he simply wrapped his arm around my shoulders, drawing me against his side. I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting rhythm of his heartbeat.
"He looks happy," I said softly, watching Lucas toss a tennis ball across the green.
"He is happy, Elena," Sylvester replied, his lips brushing the top of my head. "And he is safe. The Consortium’s restructuring is complete. The board has been purged. There is no one left to challenge his name."
At that moment, Marcus walked swiftly onto the veranda, his expression stark and devoid of its usual professional calm. He carried a secure satellite communications terminal that was blinking with a priority red beacon.
"Boss," Marcus interrupted, his voice hushed and urgent. "We have a critical breach."
Sylvester’s posture stiffened immediately, his protective instincts flaring back to life. "Sterling is in maximum security. Who is breaching?"
"Not Sterling," Marcus said, placing the terminal on the stone table and entering a decryption key. "Our intelligence listening post in Singapore just intercepted an encrypted transmission sent directly to this estate’s private IP address ten seconds ago. It originated from the private sovereign yacht of the Romanov-Rothschild maritime fleet."
A chilling, distorted voice echoed from the terminal's speakers:
*"Congratulations, Mr. Kane. You destroyed my pawns, the Caldwells and Sterling, with remarkable efficiency. But Julian Vance did not hide only his son ten years ago. He took something that belonged to the Consortium’s true masters... something buried beneath the boy’s bloodline. We are docking in your harbor tonight. Prepare the tribute, or we will take both the boy and the mother together."*

The screen went black, leaving only a ticking countdown timer: **11:59:59**.
Sylvester stared at the dark monitor, his jaw hardening into granite, as the shadow of a far deadlier war descended over our sanctuary.
