Chapter 33 - The Iron Forge

The sterile white lights of the Citadel’s underground medical wing hummed with mechanical indifference. For four agonizing hours, Lucas and I sat behind the reinforced glass observation wall, watching the surgical team fight for Sylvester’s life. The steady, rhythmic beeping of the cardiac monitor was our only anchor in a sea of dread.

When the lead surgeon finally stepped through the pressurized doors, peeling off his blood-spattered gloves, he looked utterly exhausted.

"He's through the worst of it," the doctor said, wiping his brow. "The bullet was custom-machined tungsten—designed to shatter on impact and shred soft tissue. If it had hit him an inch lower, he would have bled out on the gravel. But his bone density and sheer physical resilience saved his life. The artery has been repaired. He’s stable, Mrs. Elena."

A breath I hadn’t realized I was holding rushed out of my lungs, my knees nearly buckling beneath me. Lucas buried his face in my skirt, letting out a soft, relieved sob.

"Thank you," I breathed. "Can we see him?"

"He's awake already," the doctor remarked, shaking his head in disbelief. "Refused postoperative sedation the moment he regained consciousness. Demanded to see his security commanders."

I pushed open the heavy door to the recovery room. Sylvester was propped up on the mechanical bed, his left arm immobilized in a heavy sling, thick gauze wrapping his shoulder and torso. Despite the tubes and monitors tethered to him, his presence dominated the room like a caged panther. Marcus and three field commanders stood at rigid attention beside the bed, their faces grim.

The moment Sylvester saw Lucas and me, the lethal hardness in his eyes melted away.

"Get out," Sylvester commanded his men without looking at them. "Give us the room."

Marcus bowed his head slightly. "Understood, sir. We’ve quarantined the perimeter. No one breathes within ten miles without our clearance."

As the heavy doors sealed behind the guards, Lucas rushed forward, stopping just short of the bed as if afraid to touch Sylvester's bandages. Sylvester reached out with his uninjured right arm, cupping the back of Lucas's head and drawing him into a gentle embrace.

"Still standing, little man," Sylvester murmured, his deep voice thick with raspy emotion. "Didn't break me."

"You scared me," Lucas said quietly, leaning his forehead against the side of the bed.

Sylvester looked up, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made the breath catch in my throat. "I promised you that no one would ever harm either of you again, Elena. I intend to keep that promise, even if I have to tear down every dynasty in this hemisphere to do it."

"Who was it?" I asked, stepping closer and taking his uninjured hand. "Victoria Caldwell is dead. Her estate is ashes. Who pulled that trigger?"

Sylvester's expression darkened into an abyss of cold fury. "The bullet bore the hallmark of the Black Vane Syndicate. Victoria didn't fund this on her own. She was merely the venomous mouth; someone far higher up the food chain was holding her leash. And they made the fatal mistake of missing."
