Chapter 23 - Cold Blood and Iron

By the time we surfaced onto the gravel bed of the decommissioned freight depot, the rain was pouring down in relentless sheets. The night sky over the city was illuminated by the sweeping searchlights of three Blackwood security helicopters hovering low, their rotor wash whipping the dark trees into a violent frenzy.
The city had become a locked fortress within thirty minutes. Sylvester’s iron will moved pieces on the board with terrifying speed. Every bridge crossing the river had been choked by armed private security cordons disguised as municipal police checkpoints. The stock market hadn't opened yet, but the Caldwell family’s remaining offshore shell companies were being dismantled by Sylvester's cyber teams, asset by asset, account by account.
"They won't try to cross the river," Sylvester analyzed, staring at the digital tactical map glowing on a tablet held by Walter, whose arm was now tightly bound in a sling. "Sterling is a narcissist backed into a corner. When a man like him loses his pride, his fortune, and his name, he doesn't run to hide in a ditch. He runs to a monument of his former glory."
"The Caldwell Estate was seized by the bank three weeks ago," I pointed out, my mind racing through every newspaper article and court document I had pored over. "It’s chained shut."
"Not the city manor," Sylvester corrected, his voice dropping into an ominous whisper. "The ancestral estate out in the Whispering Pines. The estate where his father ruled, and where he believed he was untouchable. That land was tied up in an irrevocable trust registered under Victoria’s maiden name. It hasn't been liquidated yet."
Before Walter could answer, the satellite phone in Sylvester’s vest began to ring with an unlisted, high-priority frequency.
Sylvester tapped the speakerphone button, his expression freezing into a mask of pure granite. "Speak."
A high-pitched, manic laugh crackled through the speaker, competing with the patter of heavy rain. It was Victoria Caldwell.
*"Did you miss us, darling?"* Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with unhinged hysteria. *"Tell me, Elena... how does it feel to know that your little gutter rat is currently sitting on the floor of a cage, right where animals belong?"*
My blood turned to molten lead. "If you lay a single finger on my son, Victoria, I swear to God I will tear your throat out with my bare hands!"

*"Oh, listen to the beggar roar!"* Victoria cackled. Then, a deeper, gravelly voice cut in—cold, bitter, and drenched in poison.
*"Enough, Victoria,"* Sterling Caldwell commanded over the line. *"Sylvester. You took my empire. You dragged my family name through the dirt in front of the entire elite circle. Now, you will pay the toll."*
