Chapter 19 - The Gathering Shadows

My instincts flared into high panic. "What happened? Sylvester, what is it?"
"Julian Sterling didn't accept the buyout," Sylvester said, ushering me and Lucas toward the bulletproof SUV waiting by the curb. "He defaulted on his international credit notes and declared private bankruptcy this morning. His entire fleet has been seized by foreign creditors."
"Then he’s finished!" I said, grasping Lucas’s hand tightly as the boy looked up at us, confused. "Why are we running?"
"Because a man who has lost everything has nothing left to negotiate," Sylvester answered, his eyes scanning the surrounding rooftops with deadly alertness. "Sterling emptied his personal vault before the marshals arrived. Three million in untraceable bearer bonds. And his private security detail—men recruited from black-market mercenary contracts—has vanished from their barracks."
A cold dread washed over me. Sterling hadn't just lost a corporate battle; he had gone rogue. A billionaire who no longer cared about law, legacy, or wealth—only revenge.
"Walter," Sylvester barked into his lapel radio as he slammed the heavy SUV door shut after Lucas and me. "Initiate Protocol Obsidian. Lock down the estate. Move a tactical strike team to the perimeter."
"Copy that, sir," Walter responded through the radio. "Motorcade is moving. Route Alpha is cleared."
The armored SUV accelerated rapidly, flanked by two black sedans, speeding away from the harbor toward the fortified hills of the Vance estate.
Inside the vehicle, Lucas leaned against my side, clutching his toy excavator. "Mom? Are the bad people coming back?"
I swallowed the lump in my throat, wrapping my arms tightly around him, kissing his hair. "No, sweetheart. Sylvester is going to take care of everything. You don't have to be afraid."

Up in the front passenger seat, Sylvester was loading a customized silver sidearm, checking the chamber with cold, practiced efficiency. The businessman had vanished completely; the feared lion of Highgate had taken his place.
"They won't get within a mile of this house, Elena," Sylvester promised, not turning around, his voice vibrating with lethal certainty. "I promise you."
