Chapter 16 - Midnight Embers

The ride back to the estate was wrapped in a heavy, contemplative silence. The black Maybach glided effortlessly through the rain-slicked avenues of Highgate.

I leaned against the soft leather upholstery, looking down at my hands. They were steady now, but inside, my heart was still hammering. For months, I had feared Victoria’s shadow, feared that her hatred would somehow reach Lucas. Seeing her broken and discarded tonight should have brought me absolute peace, yet Sterling’s parting words hung over me like a dark storm cloud.

Sylvester reached across the leather seat, his warm, calloused fingers closing gently over mine.

"What are you thinking, Elena?"

"I’m thinking about how easily people are discarded in your world," I whispered, turning my gaze to meet his. "Victoria was arrogant, cruel, and monstrous to my boy. But watching Sterling throw her aside tonight... it reminded me of how cold this world really is."

"It is cold," Sylvester agreed softly, pulling me closer until I was resting against his shoulder. "That is why people build walls. That is why they hoard wealth and power. To keep the cold from touching them. But you, Elena... you tore down those walls. You forced warmth into a world that forgot what it felt like."

"I just wanted Lucas to have a future," I sighed, closing my eyes and breathing in his familiar scent of cedarwood and amber. "I never wanted to be a player on this chessboard."

"You are not a player, Elena. You are my queen," Sylvester murmured, his lips gently brushing against my temple. "And on this board, I will tear down every king, knight, and pawn before I allow anyone to threaten what we have built."

When we arrived at the estate, the grand manor was quiet. Lucas was fast asleep in his second-floor bedroom, his sketchbook tucked under his arm, his little chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace. I stood by his bedside for a long time, gently kissing his forehead, smoothing away his dark curls.

He was safe. For now, the monsters had been kept at the gate.

Sylvester stood in the doorway, watching us with an expression of quiet reverence. When I turned to leave the room, he caught my hand, leading me down the grand gallery toward the master wing.
