Chapter 31 - The Shield of Iron

The crack of the rifle split the roar of the tempest, an ear-splitting snap that echoed off the granite cliffs. In that split second, time stretched into agonizing infinity. Sylvester did not hesitate; he did not flinch or calculate his own survival. With an animalistic roar torn from the depths of his lungs, he spun his massive body, throwing his back into the trajectory of the bullet while pulling both Lucas and me down into the churning mud beneath him.
The impact struck Sylvester with the force of a battering ram. A sickening, hollow thud reverberated through his chest as the high-caliber round tore into his upper shoulder. He let out a choked gasp, his colossal frame shuddering violently, but his arms remained locked around Lucas like iron bands. Hot, sticky blood immediately bloomed across the soaked fabric of his trench coat, mixing with the frigid rain that cascaded over us.
"Sylvester!" I screamed, my voice strangled by terror as the smell of fresh blood cut through the sulfur and smoke.
"Stay down!" he snarled through gritted teeth, his voice ragged with agony. Even wounded, his eyes blazed with predatory fury. He pressed Lucas flat beneath his torso, using his own body as living armor. "Keep your head down, Elena! The ridge—three hundred yards out!"
Before the assassin could cycle the bolt for a second shot, the headlights of our extraction convoy tore through the timberline. Three heavily armored black SUVs crested the ridge at breakneck speed, their tires chewing through the mud. Heavy caliber counter-fire erupted from the roof-mounted turrets of the lead vehicle, chewing the distant tree line into splinters and forcing the sniper into retreat.
Men in tactical combat gear swarmed the perimeter within seconds, creating an impenetrable ring of ballistic shields around us. Marcus, Sylvester’s second-in-command, dropped to his knees in the mud beside his fallen leader, his rifle slung tight against his vest.
"Boss! We’ve got perimeter control! Medic, move up!" Marcus barked into his comms, his face pale as he saw the blood pouring over Sylvester's collarbone.
"Leave the shooter to the sweep team," Sylvester rasped, coughing as blood flecked his lips. He refused Marcus's helping hand, forcing himself upright on sheer willpower just enough to look down at Lucas. His voice softened to a broken murmur. "Lucas... did it touch you? Are you hurt, boy?"
Lucas shook his head violently, tears carving clean trails down his soot-stained cheeks as he clutched Sylvester’s soaking lapel. "No, no, I'm okay... You’re bleeding! Mom, help him!"
"I have you," I whispered, pressing my trembling palms against the gaping wound on Sylvester's shoulder, trying desperately to stem the arterial tide. "I'm right here. You hold on, Sylvester. Don't you dare close your eyes!"

"I'm not dying tonight, Elena," he ground out, a faint, feral smirk gracing his bloodied lips before his eyes rolled back, his immense body finally collapsing into the arms of his men.
